Full job description

Job Title: Group Facilitator (Food and Land)

Position Type: Regular, Part-Time

Wage Rate: Grid 10 (regular wage: $31.57/hour)

This position is compensated in accordance with the Fernwood NH/BCGEU Collective Agreement wage grid. Wage rates are aligned with the CSS-GS JJEP. Probationary wage is 85% of the regular wage.

Hours & Schedule: 25 hours/week

The schedule for this position is mutually determined with the supervisor, however, is generally as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday
  • Mondays: 12:00pm – 7:30pm (7.5 hours with 30-minute unpaid break)
  • Tuesdays – Thursdays: 9:30am – 4:00pm (6.5 hours with 30-minute unpaid break)
  • Alternate days, evenings, and weekends scheduled as needed

Fernwood Neighbourhood House (FNH) is a vibrant, multi-service organization working on the unceded ləkʷəŋən (Lekwungen) lands in Victoria, BC. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, resilient, and connected community through programs and services for children, families, and community members.

Job Summary

We are looking for a Group Facilitator (Food and Land) to facilitate community programs, workshops, activities, and gatherings focused on food, gardening, land-based activities, and community connection. The position supports participants in accessing resources, developing skills, and engaging with their community.

General Responsibilities

  • Facilitate workshops, activities, gatherings, and other group sessions related to food, gardening, land, and community connection. This includes programs such as community gardening workshops, community meals, cultural food workshops, and Get Growing.
  • Recruit and orient participants and support their involvement in programs.
  • Plan and prepare sessions in accordance with program guidelines and participant needs.
  • Promote programs through community outreach, presentations, and distribution of promotional materials.
  • Prepare promotional materials (such as posters and social media posts) using program templates and guidelines.
  • Prepare facilities, equipment, and materials for group sessions.
  • Obtain participant feedback and support program evaluation.
  • Provide follow-up support and information to participants as required.
  • Maintain accurate program records and reports.
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant community resources and provide information to participants.
  • Orient, monitor, and provide work direction to volunteers and/or practicum students.
  • Perform gardening and maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, planting, and watering.
  • Maintain garden areas, sheds, sidewalks, and related spaces using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Transport equipment, supplies, and materials manually and using equipment such as dollies and carts.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to pick up and transport goods and supplies, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to safely use basic gardening and maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence (access to a vehicle is an asset).
  • Experience facilitating groups and/or working in community, food, gardening, or land-based programs is an asset.
  • Knowledge or experience with gardening, food systems, or community food programs is an asset.
  • Successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal record check.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with gardening and transporting supplies.
  • Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs. (wheelbarrows of soil, plants, food donations)
  • Ability to stand for long periods, crouch, bend frequently.

Unionized Position

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace, and this position is part of the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU) bargaining unit.

This position is open to all applicants. This position requires union membership and is covered by the BCGEU Collective Agreement. The successful applicant will become a member of the BCGEU and union dues will be deducted in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
