Position Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Bioinformatics Scientist in the Department of Research and Development. The successful candidate will focus on the analysis of large NGS datasets with in-depth knowledge of data-handling and sufficient knowledge of cancer genomics. This position will provide ample opportunities for professional development and the acquisition of cutting-edge skills in basic and translational cancer genomics research, research planning and strategy, and data analysis and interpretation.

Responsibilities include:

• Identifies and explores signals relevant to early cancer detection from large-scale NGS data;
• Develops and prototypes novel machine learning models for cancer signal detection in liquid biopsy;
• Conducts and optimizes bioinformatic analysis of NGS data and various statistical analyses;
• Records all analysis steps in an accurate, timely and clearly presented manner, and use this to prepare data summaries and reports as and when required;
• Performs literature reviews, prepares data visualization, and drafts scientific publications and grant proposals;
• Prepares conference abstracts, posters and presentations;
• Supervises junior bioinformaticians;
• Provides scientific support to customers and research collaborators;
• Other duties as assigned.

Position requirements

• PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, machine learning, statistics or a related discipline with over 5 years of research experience
• Strong background with unix/linux tools and coding experience with PERL, PYTHON or related data analysis languages;
• Solid understanding of statistics, expertise in R and Bioconductor;
• Exposure to NGS data is mandatory with advanced knowledge of NGS platforms, datatype (FASTQ, BAM, VCF, MAF) and analysis tools;
• A proven track record in the analysis of large “omics” data sets (e.g. RNA-seq, whole genome/exome sequencing and epigenomics data) and clinical NGS data sets;
• Experienced with systematically designing, training, debugging, and evaluating machine learning models such as boosting ensemble methods, neural networks and deep learning;
• Experienced developing and implementing deep learning methods, and going beyond packaged algorithms;
• Experience in working with test-driven programming and version control is an asset;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and proven leadership abilities.
