Position Title: Millwright Estimator

About the Role:
Octo is growing, and we are looking to add a Millwright Estimator to our team. The Millwright Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, proposals, and bid packages for industrial mechanical and millwright projects. This role works closely with project managers, operations teams, vendors, and clients to analyze project requirements, determine labour and material costs, and support successful project execution from tender through award.

The ideal candidate has strong industrial construction knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and experience estimating millwright, rigging, equipment installation, shutdown, and maintenance work.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Estimating & Tendering

  • Review drawings, specifications, bid documents, and site requirements.
  • Prepare detailed labor, equipment, subcontractor, and material estimates.
  • Develop accurate project take-offs and scopes of work.
  • Solicit and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
  • Prepare competitive bid proposals and pricing summaries.
  • Identify project risks, exclusions, and value-engineering opportunities.
  • Maintain estimating databases, labor units, and historical costing information.

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate with project managers and field supervisors during handoff meetings.
  • Assist with scheduling and planning requirements during pre-construction.
  • Participate in site visits and pre-bid walkthroughs.
  • Support change order pricing and extra work quotations during project execution.

Client & Vendor Relations

  • Communicate with clients regarding scope clarifications and bid requirements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, contractors, and customers.
  • Coordinate RFIs (Requests for Information) as required during the bidding process.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and support company safety standards and procedures.
  • Ensure estimates comply with applicable codes, regulations, and client specifications.
  • Understand industrial site safety requirements and shutdown environments.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman Millwright certification preferred.
  • 3–10 years of industrial millwright or mechanical construction experience.
  • Proven experience as a Millwright Foreman on industrial or shutdown work
  • Strong working knowledge of rigging, install sequencing, alignment, and industrial construction
  • Strong leadership and communication skills across multiple crews
  • Ability to plan work under tight deadlines and changing site conditions
  • Safety tickets and training required by company/site standards

Experience

  • Previous estimating experience in industrial construction or maintenance considered an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Experience with estimating software is considered an asset.
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as required.
  • Strong understanding of: Equipment installation and alignment, Material Procurement, Rigging and lifting operations, Shutdown/turnaround work, Industrial piping and mechanical systems, Structural and mechanical drawings
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Strong time management and multitasking abilities.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and field installation processes.
  • Experience working in: Manufacturing facilities, Food processing plants, Oil & gas, Mining, Forestry or industrial facilities

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and field/site work (site visits).
  • Occasional travel and overtime may be required to meet tender deadlines.
  • Fast-paced environment with multiple concurrent projects.
