CAMH’s Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute (CFMHRI) is seeking a full-time, permanent Scientific Associate specializing in neural data systems and behavioral analytics. The Scientific Associate will serve as a central technical and scientific lead within the laboratory, with primary responsibility for developing, standardizing, and maintaining pipelines for neural and behavioral data acquisition, analysis, documentation, and open data sharing. This role integrates data engineering, experimental design, and personnel training to ensure rigor, reproducibility, and scalability of research operations. The Scientific Associate will also lead efforts to implement and validate emerging technologies for behavioral tracking and pose estimation, and to integrate these measures with neural recordings. Reporting to the Principal Investigator, this position will play a key role in shaping lab-wide infrastructure and mentoring trainees in best practices across experimental and computational workflows.
Design, implement, and maintain scalable pipelines for neural and behavioral data acquisition, processing, and analysis (e.g., electrophysiology, photometry, video-based tracking).
Develop standardized workflows for data organization, versioning, and documentation to ensure reproducibility and long-term accessibility.
Lead implementation of open science practices, including dataset curation, metadata standards, and public data sharing.
Integrate multimodal datasets (neural, behavioral, anatomical) into cohesive analysis frameworks.
Evaluate, implement, and validate new hardware and software platforms for behavioral tracking, pose estimation, and neural data acquisition.
Build and optimize custom experimental systems (e.g., synchronized neural-behavioral recording setups).
Establish benchmarking and validation protocols for new tools and methodologies.
Expand lab capacity for high-throughput and high-resolution behavioral phenotyping.
Provide hands-on mentorship and troubleshooting support across projects.
Serve as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting experimental and data pipeline issues.
Contribute to onboarding and technical training of new lab members
Develop and deliver structured training programs for students and staff in:
Contribute to experimental design, particularly where integration of neural and behavioral data is required.
Support grant applications and methods development in areas related to data systems and behavioral analysis.
Establish and maintain lab-wide SOPs for experimental and computational workflows.
Establish and enforce standards for data integrity, documentation, and reproducibility across all lab projects.
Audit data pipelines and workflows to ensure compliance with best practices and funding agency requirements.
Generate internal documentation and reports on data systems and lab infrastructure.
PhD in biological, medical, neuroscience, or computer science.
1 years of relevant research experience.
Experience gained during graduate studies or postdoctoral training, including conducting experiments, data collection and analysis, and research publication
Extensive experience with rodent stereotaxic survival surgeries, in vivo neural recording techniques, and behavioral assays.
Demonstrated expertise in scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, MED-PC), image analysis (e.g. ImageJ/FIJI, Brainglobe) and machine learning-based behavioral analysis tools (e.g., SLEAP, SimBA).
Experience building or integrating experimental hardware and data acquisition systems strongly preferred.
A record of contributions to scientific publications.
Proven track record of mentoring trainees and advising others in developing technical workflows.
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and the scientific community.
Demonstrated ability to interact with populations of diverse ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary is competitive and based on experience, with a hiring range of $93,822.73 – $117,278.41 per year.
- Employees in this role may progress within the full pay range of $93,822.73 – $140,734.09 per year
