Full job description

Position Summary

This dual-scope role supports daily IVF laboratory operations — assisting embryologists and andrologists with lab preparation, equipment maintenance, inventory, quality control, and specimen processing. As training and competency are achieved, the successful candidate will progress to performing routine andrology procedures independently under established protocols.

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor (if applicable) and Laboratory Director. Works under direct supervision until techniques are signed off.

Role Specific Scope

Laboratory Support

  • Assists with paperwork, data entry, and sample control for Embryology and Andrology.
  • Maintains lab cleanliness, stocking, and inventory; flags shortages.
  • Supports equipment maintenance/function checks and daily QC activities.
  • Assists with specimen transport per established protocols.
  • Andrology Responsibilities (post-training, competency-validated)
  • Receives and processes semen specimens; performs semen analysis (concentration, motility, morphology, viability) per WHO guidelines.
  • Prepares sperm samples for IUI and ART procedures.
  • Performs semen cryopreservation and thaw.
  • Maintains accurate, real-time documentation and QC records.
  • Communicates abnormal findings to senior staff; participates in proficiency testing.

Role scope may evolve as the clinic grows.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance

  • Strict SOP adherence and accurate documentation.
  • Compliance with biosafety, infection control, and privacy legislation (PIPEDA/provincial requirements).
  • Supports inspection and accreditation readiness.

Performance Milestones

  • Initial 3–6 month evaluation per clinic HR policy.
  • Progression to independent andrology practice contingent on Laboratory Director sign-off.

Qualifications

Required

  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic to intermediate computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, internet/email systems).
  • Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a clinical, research, or IVF laboratory setting.
  • Experience in andrology or reproductive medicine.
  • Familiarity with laboratory quality management systems.
  • Experience working within regulated healthcare environments.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Adherence to biological safety standards, exposure control plans, and safe handling of sharps and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Working knowledge of chemical handling, compressed gas safety, liquid nitrogen safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Participation in annual safety training, including hand hygiene certification and WHMIS compliance.
