Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and results-driven Director of Care to lead the delivery of clinical and personal care services within our senior living/long-term care community. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Care provides leadership to the nursing team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, resident-centred care while maintaining compliance with all applicable legislation, professional standards, and organizational policies.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the clinical, operational, human resource, quality improvement, and regulatory functions of the Nursing Department and will champion a culture of excellence, accountability, and person-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Resident Care
- Lead and oversee all aspects of resident care, assessments, care planning, and clinical services.
- Ensure safe, effective, and resident-centred care delivery in accordance with evidence-based practices.
- Monitor resident health status and ensure timely communication of changes to physicians, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
- Review pre-admission assessments and support admissions, transitions, and discharge planning.
- Coordinate and participate in resident and family care conferences.
- Oversee medication administration, treatments, physician orders, laboratory services, diagnostics, and pharmacy services.
- Promote and uphold the Residents' Bill of Rights.
Quality, Risk & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with the Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021, Ontario Regulation 246/22, College of Nurses of Ontario standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, and other applicable legislation.
- Lead infection prevention and control (IPAC) initiatives and ensure adherence to clinical best practices.
- Manage incident reporting, risk management, corrective action plans, and quality improvement programs.
- Monitor clinical outcomes, identify trends, and implement quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and compliant clinical documentation.
Leadership & Human Resources
- Recruit, orient, schedule, supervise, coach, mentor, and evaluate nursing staff.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performance work environment.
- Support employee development through ongoing coaching, education, and performance management.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Lead departmental meetings and ensure effective communication across all levels of the organization.
Operational & Financial Management
- Manage departmental budgets, staffing resources, purchasing, and resource allocation.
- Ensure efficient utilization of human, material, and financial resources.
- Participate in policy development, program implementation, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Collaborate with external healthcare providers, community partners, and regulatory bodies.
Resident & Family Experience
- Build strong relationships with residents, families, and substitute decision-makers.
- Address concerns, complaints, and service issues promptly and professionally.
- Promote a culture of respect, dignity, inclusion, and person-centred care.
Qualifications
Required
- Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), or eligible to practice in Ontario.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience as an RN in a long-term care setting.
- Minimum three (3) years of leadership, management, or supervisory experience in a healthcare environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of long-term care legislation, nursing standards, and evidence-based clinical practices.
- Strong knowledge of person-centred care principles and resident rights.
- Experience with quality improvement, infection prevention and control, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic health documentation systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Preferred
- Knowledge of RAI-MDS; AIS certification preferred (or willingness to obtain within one year of hire).
- Experience managing budgets and departmental resources.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary teams in long-term care or senior living environments.
Documentation requirements
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Vulnerable Sector Check (within six months) or willingness to obtain.
- Current TB testing or chest X-ray as required by Public Health guidelines.
- Two supervisory references.
- Proof of required vaccinations.
