Vitalis Comprehensive Healthcare and Surgical Centre is a patient-focused surgical facility providing safe, efficient, and high-quality care in an acute and ambulatory surgical environment. Our comprehensive healthcare facility is designed to offer walk-in, multidisciplinary clinics, endoscopy, and surgery under one roof.

We are seeking a full-time/part-time/casual, hands-on Biomedical/Clinical Engineering Technologist to commission, maintain, and manage the medical equipment fleet at our new surgical facility.

Position Overview

This is a rare opportunity: you will build the biomedical engineering program for a brand-new facility from day one, including initial incoming inspection and certification of our surgical, anesthesia, endoscopy, and patient monitoring equipment, and the preventive maintenance program that keeps it running. Our clinic is conveniently situated in southwest Winnipeg in McGillivray Business Park off high traffic McGillivray Boulevard, near one of Winnipeg's fastest growing residential hubs. Key Responsibilities

The Biomedical Engineering Technologist is responsible for daily technical support activities related to equipment and devices used within the clinical, allied health, and/or support service departments to which they are assigned. The major responsibility is ensuring that all complex medical devices used are maintained at a high degree of efficiency to ensure effective, safe care of the patient and safe use for the operator.

• Perform incoming inspection, electrical safety testing, performance verification, and certification of medical equipment prior to clinical use
• Establish and maintain the preventive maintenance program, equipment inventory, and service documentation in line with CSA standards and facility accreditation requirements
• Maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair equipment including anesthesia machines, patient monitors, defibrillators, infusion and syringe pumps, electrosurgical units, endoscopy towers, ultrasound systems, OR tables, and sterilization support equipment
• Perform electrical safety testing to CSA Z32/C22.2 No. 60601 requirements using biomedical test equipment
• Coordinate third-party and manufacturer service, parts sourcing, and loaner equipment where specialized service is required
• Support medical device incident investigation, recalls tracking, and Health Canada mandatory problem reporting
• Maintain records required for CPSM facility accreditation and participate in accreditation readiness
• Advise on equipment acquisition, refurbishment, and end-of-life replacement planning
• Uphold Vitalis standards for professionalism, confidentiality, and patient safety

Required Qualifications and Certification

• Diploma in Biomedical Engineering Technology or equivalent (e.g., NAIT, BCIT, or comparable program)
• Registration with CTTAM (Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba Inc.) required.
• Certification as a Certified Biomedical Engineering Technologist (CBET(c)) with The Canadian Board of Examiners for Biomedical Engineering Technologists and Technicians will be an asset

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

• Proven experience inspecting, maintaining, and repairing anesthesia, perioperative, or endoscopy equipment in a hospital, surgical, or clinical setting
• Experience of commissioning equipment and install medical devices according to manufacturer specifications and ensure proper integration with existing systems.
• Familiarity with refurbished/pre-owned equipment assessment and installation
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team to manage a complete equipment program

Skills

• Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to maintenance and repair tasks.
• Knowledge of schematics, technical diagrams, and low voltage electrical systems used in biomedical equipment with ability to interpret technical manuals and troubleshoot complex hardware issues involving computer hardware and medical devices.
• Strong communication skills and good interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with healthcare professionals and team members to provide training on equipment operation and safety procedures, emphasizing mechanical knowledge and computer networking skill
• Working knowledge of relevant CSA standards, electrical safety testing, and PM documentation practices
• Good organizational and time management skills with strong documentation habits and attention to detail
• Professional, patient-safety-first approach with a strong customer service focus
• Working knowledge of plumbing, hydraulics and/or electronic installations is an asset.
• Ability to utilize hand tools and low voltage electrical knowledge to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical problems efficiently.
• Maintain detailed service records, including logs of repairs, maintenance activities, and parts used, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Schedule & Work Environment

• Flexible hours; with occasional evening or weekend availability
• Work within a modern facility with procedure rooms, pre-op bays, and recovery areas
• The position routinely involves working with small delicate instrumentation requiring manual dexterity and normal vision, with or without correction.
• Incumbents may be exposed to solvents used as cleaning agents for solder flux remover, switch cleaners and other chemicals used in electronic maintenance.
