Full job description
Summary & Purpose
The primary role of the School Bus Driver is to safely transport students to and from school while following all transportation laws and school transportation procedures. This position will also be responsible for overseeing the Nanoose First Nation’s bus fleet, which includes 5 buses and a wheelchair accessible van. This includes regular maintenance and scheduling.
The School Bus Driver will work in partnership with school staff and families to support the vision, mission and values of Snaw-naw-as School within their role and work in partnership with Nanoose First Nation to care for and maintain the Nation’s bus fleet. The driver will work in accordance with the values, beliefs and traditions of the community.
The position performs a range of functions such as, but not limited to:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely transport students to and from school
- Support Snaw-naw-as School policies and procedures within the context of school transportation
- Communicate regularly with school staff
- Perform additional bus routes as required, e.g. fieldtrips
- Perform routine maintenance of the fleet; e.g. cleaning, daily checks, etc.
- Carry out maintenance tasks on fleet vehicles within a reasonable scope
- Ensure required inspections are scheduled and completed every 6 months
- Maintain logs for each vehicle in the fleet
- Practice safe driving and respect all bus safety guidelines at all times
- Communicate with the school, staff, and community members to ensure smooth operations
- Carry out emergency protocols when necessary; e.g. earthquake, crash, or injury
- Ensure regular inspections for the upkeep and maintenance of seats, heating, and other equipment
- Assist passengers who may have disabilities with entering and exiting the bus, as well as with their property (bags, assistive devices)
- Perform other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience
- Class 4 Unrestricted License with an Air Brake Endorsement, required
- Possess a clean driver’s abstract, required
- Possess a clear Criminal Record Check, within the vulnerable sector, required
- Basic Operational First Aid, with CPR Level C, required
- Maintenance/Auto-mechanical experience
- Experience working within Indigenous communities, preferred
- Driving experience where youths were the primary cliental, preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent driving skills
- Ability to drive a large vehicle in various weather/temperature conditions
- Skills involving behavioural management
- Skills involving intervening and deescalating difficult situations, such as bullying
- Knowledge and adherence to all vehicle safety protocols, including the BC Motor Vehicle Act
- Knowledge/understanding of relevant auto mechanics
- Knowledge/understanding of vehicle systems
- Knowledge of the Snaw-naw-as Community and/or other First Nations Communities within BC
Working Conditions
Incumbent will be comfortable driving large vehicles in various weather conditions and temperatures.
This position description outlines the key responsibilities for the role and is not meant to be exhaustive. It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the Manager and/or the Director of Operations and the incumbent, in order to effectively meet the requirements of Nanoose First Nation.
Hours
Regular hours of 7:30am to 3:30pm
Monday to Friday
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Compensation and Benefits
The wage ($29 to $31) per hour is based upon experience.
Employees will be eligible for the employee benefits plan upon completion of three months continuous employment.
Pay: $29.00-$31.00 per hour
