Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe verbatim, accurately capturing all speech and environmental auditory information for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students who need to follow the written word on a screen for, classroom lectures, labs, university events.
  • Take comprehensive notes of classroom lectures and labs that are accurate, clear and accessible in a written (or typed) format for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. Include any environmental auditory information such as fire alarms.
  • Active listening, focus on capturing key ideas, themes and supporting details.
  • Properly label notes with correct date, course name and lecture title ensuring proper spelling/grammar/punctuation and format is to the approved standard.
  • Upload completed notes to the Student Portal in a timely manner.
  • Be objective, record information neutrally and from the presenter’s perspective.
  • Maintain Confidentiality and respect the privacy of the student receiving the notes. Refrain from discussing any personal information about the student and their disability.
  • Provide support to the co-transcriber/note-taker by monitoring their work, correcting errors and inserting missed or incorrect information.
  • Provide services in person (campus) and/or online using various on-line platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google meets.
  • Use various applications to transcribe/note-take such as Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
  • Obtain laptop, transport to classroom and set up; return laptop to AS office afterward.
  • Obtain course syllabus and know important dates.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree an asset.
  • 2 years of directly related transcribing/notetaking experience is desirable.
  • Keyboarding speed of 80+ wpm.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to function independently.
  • Must be able to function as a member of the educational team.
  • Ability to attend to details.
  • Ability to retain and summarize information.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to maintain neutrality, confidentiality and objectivity in relation to instructor, student, and subject matter.
  • Commitment to provide quality professional service.
  • Commitment to life-long learning and professional development.

An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The salary range for this position will be from $24.65 to $34.87 hourly.

Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person.
