Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline is required.
  • Licensed Practice Nurse or other nursing training preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum one year of directly related experience required, preferably in a hospital/medical setting.
  • Experience using and maintaining nursing care equipment required, including ability to troubleshoot malfunction and perform minor repairs.
  • Experience operating audio-visual equipment required.
  • Experience with EPIC ordering system preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, and organization abilities.
  • Excellent command of the English language - verbal and written - required.
  • Must have a mature attitude with attention to detail and ability to complete assignments in the midst of distractions.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting required - maximum weight approximately 80 lbs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and equipment used in nursing required.
  • Microcomputer skills using Microsoft Office Suite of programs required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.

Key responsibilities

Preparation of Mannequins, VR Lab, and Skills Labs

  • Receives thorough training on each type of hi- and mid-fidelity mannequin and virtual reality (VR) hardware and software, including setup, programming, troubleshooting, changing parts, and terminal clean (terminal clean is listed under Part C ‘Cleaning’).
  • Performs routine maintenance of mid- and high-fidelity mannequins and VR hardware used in CoN Simulation Labs.
  • Liaises with mannequin company regarding mannequin operation and needed repairs (communicate this with Simulation Coordinator and Manager).
  • Maintains a record/documentation of this information (dates, issue, etc.).
  • Programs mannequins according to the simulation-based experience (SBE) and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).
  • Organizes equipment for Labs prior to beginning of each academic term (this involves checking with Lab Leaders before the start of Fall term, Winter term, and Summer term for changes to ensure preparation is completed prior to start of term).
  • Demonstrates equipment operations and procedures to Simulation staff, as required.
  • Trains Simulation Operators during orientation session.
  • Serves as a resource for the Simulation Operators relating to required supplies and mannequin function.
  • Sets up bedside equipment and patient units in all Labs, e.g., intravenous and oxygen administration, catheterization, nasogastric intubation, suturing, etc. as needed.
  • Fabricates and adapts medical and teaching equipment to simulate real life scenarios per instructors’ direction.
  • Operates specialized medical/nursing equipment that requires theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Keeps up to date with safety policies (e.g., disposal of sharps), lab equipment techniques, and equipment changes.
  • Participates in regular meetings with Skills and Simulation staff on SBE and OSCE cases to discuss set up, techniques and modifications.
  • Checks the accuracy of shipment and follow-up as necessary, e.g., if order is incomplete or equipment is not working.
  • Liaises with Simulation and Skills Coordinators re lab preparation for special bookings (e.g., Remediation, Tours, Photos).
  • Acts as a resource for all CoN Skills and Simulation staff, including Midwifery and NP.
  • Performs routine maintenance of specialized medical/nursing equipment in Labs, repairs equipment as needed, provides information to the Simulation Coordinator, and arranges for repairs.
  • Calibrates and tests medical/nursing equipment in all areas as required.
  • Collects and acts as liaison with secondary sources for acquisition and maintenance of supplies.
  • Maintains a system for ordering supplies, recommends purchase of some equipment based on research on current developments.
  • Maintains supply of linen for the labs, arranging for pick-up and delivery.
  • Under the direction of the instructors, maintains and updates policy and procedure manuals/monographs for Labs and those from the regional health authorities.

Clerical/Administrative

  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies at an adequate level, collaborating with the Sims/Skills Coordinators and Program-specific Coordinators (NP/Midwifery) as needed or when ordering needs to occur.
  • Recommends purchase of equipment based on changing SBEs and OSCEs.
  • Empties confidential waste into the main 3rd or 4th floor receptacle.
  • Maintains a current copy of all applicable policy and procedure manuals/drug monographs in each Learning Lab.
  • Maintains supply of linen for the Simulation Labs, coordinating supply and dirty linen pickup with Skills Coordinator or Skills Lab Technician.
  • Assists with scheduling and planning of open lab practice times.

Cleaning

  • Manages garbage (non-medical waste) and used supplies (i.e., IV tubing, etc) in collaboration with Caretaking Services.
  • Cleans labs including dusting and washing, excluding floors, as needed.
  • Daily upkeep of lab facilities, maintaining an acceptable level of cleanliness.
  • Deep cleans and “terminal cleaning” of mannequins and other equipment used in simulation at the term end.
  • Other duties as assigned.
