Position Overview

The OR Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe, high-quality, patient-centred nursing care throughout the surgical experience. The OR Nurse works as an integral member of the surgical team and supports the efficient flow of elective orthopedic and ambulatory procedures.

The OR Nurse works closely with surgeons, anesthesia teams, other nursing staff, surgical coordinators, medical device representatives, and facility personnel to ensure patients, operating rooms, equipment, instruments, implants, medications, and supplies are appropriately prepared for each surgical case.

This role requires strong clinical knowledge, attention to detail, teamwork, adaptability, and a commitment to providing an exceptional patient experience.

Key ResponsibilitiesPerioperative Nursing Care

• Provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centred nursing care throughout the perioperative experience.
• Complete pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative nursing responsibilities within the scope of the role and facility.
• Complete appropriate patient assessments and verify required documentation prior to surgery.
• Confirm patient identity, procedure, consent, allergies, surgical site, and other required safety checks.
• Participate in surgical time-outs and established surgical safety checklists.
• Monitor and respond appropriately to changes in the patient's condition.
• Maintain patient privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety throughout the surgical experience.
• Provide appropriate handover and communication to recovery staff following the procedure.
• Recognize and escalate patient-care concerns or changes in condition appropriately.

Operating Room Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room for scheduled surgical procedures.
• Ensure the OR is clean, organized, and appropriately set up prior to each case.
• Review the surgical schedule and prepare for upcoming procedures.
• Confirm that required instruments, equipment, implants, medications, and supplies are available and functional.
• Review surgeon preference cards and case-specific requirements.
• Assist with positioning and preparation of patients according to the procedure and established protocols.
• Perform circulating and/or scrub responsibilities as required and within individual competency.
• Maintain a safe and organized sterile environment.
• Support efficient turnover between surgical cases.
• Identify and communicate equipment, supply, or workflow concerns promptly.

Surgical Case Preparation

• Review upcoming cases to identify special equipment, instrumentation, implants, supplies, or other requirements.
• Ensure required patient information and documentation are available prior to surgery.
• Communicate with surgical coordinators, surgeons, anesthesia, vendors, and facility staff regarding outstanding case requirements.
• Confirm availability and functionality of specialized equipment prior to the procedure.
• Assist with preparation for orthopedic, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, and other ambulatory procedures as applicable.
• Ensure appropriate specimen collection, labeling, handling, and documentation when required.

Equipment, Instruments & Supplies

• Safely use and maintain familiarity with OR equipment and surgical instrumentation.
• Verify equipment is functioning appropriately before use and report concerns promptly.
• Ensure instruments and supplies are appropriately prepared and available for scheduled cases.
• Assist with inventory monitoring and communicate upcoming supply needs.
• Follow appropriate processes for handling, storage, cleaning, and transportation of surgical equipment and supplies.
• Work collaboratively with MDR and facility staff regarding instrumentation and equipment needs.
• Communicate equipment failures, missing supplies, or damaged instrumentation to the appropriate team member.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

• Practice in accordance with applicable nursing regulatory requirements, facility policies, professional standards, and Acumen procedures.
• Follow established OR policies, SOPs, checklists, and surgical safety processes.
• Maintain current knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
• Follow appropriate sterile technique and aseptic practices.
• Participate in incident reporting and follow-up when required.
• Identify potential patient-safety risks and communicate concerns promptly.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
• Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are readily available and appropriately maintained.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing education.

Communication & Teamwork

• Work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, surgical coordinators, facility staff, vendors, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Communicate effectively before, during, and after surgical procedures.
• Provide clear and timely handover to other members of the care team.
• Maintain a respectful, professional, and collaborative working environment.
• Speak up appropriately regarding patient safety, surgical concerns, or identified risks.
• Support team members and contribute to a positive workplace culture.
• Adapt to changing surgical schedules, case requirements, and operational needs.

• Maintain a patient-first approach throughout the surgical experience.
• Provide reassurance, education, and support to patients and families as appropriate.
• Help create a calm, professional, and respectful environment for patients.
• Advocate for patient needs and communicate concerns to the appropriate healthcare provider.
• Support safe and efficient patient flow while maintaining high standards of care.

Process Improvement & Professional Development

• Participate in the development and improvement of OR workflows and processes.
• Identify opportunities to improve patient safety, efficiency, communication, and the overall surgical experience.
• Provide constructive feedback regarding equipment, supplies, workflows, and clinical processes.
• Participate in staff education, orientation, and ongoing professional development.
• Maintain competency in assigned surgical procedures, equipment, and clinical responsibilities.
• Remain current with relevant perioperative nursing practices and standards.

Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse registration in Alberta.
• Current BLS certification.
• Perioperative/OR nursing certification required.
• Experience in an orthopedic or ambulatory surgical environment is an asset.
• Experience with scrub and circulating roles is preferred.
• Strong understanding of surgical workflows and perioperative nursing practices.
• Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Reporting Relationship

The OR Registered Nurse reports to the appropriate Acumen OR Manager and Surgical Director and works closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical coordinators, nursing staff, and operating room personnel.

Pay: $50,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
