Job Description

AECOM
is seeking multiple Summer Ecology Interns to support our Environmental and Ecological Services team in Northern Ontario. These roles are on-site, locally based positions, and successful candidates are expected to live in or near Dryden, Red Lake, Thunder Bay, or Winnipeg for the duration of the internship.

Interns will complete their work from their home location and surrounding project areas, while reporting remotely to AECOM project teams and supervisors based out of our North Bay or Sudbury offices.

These newly created opportunities offer hands-on, field‑based experience on meaningful infrastructure and resource projects while fostering professional growth through mentorship, collaboration, and real-world learning.

Rooted in respect for land, community, and sustainability, this internship is designed for individuals who are curious, adaptable, and eager to learn through both practical experience and teamwork. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals who are committed to knowledge sharing, safety, and stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

With a strong focus on safety, quality, and collaboration, the Summer Ecology Intern will:

  • Assist with ecological field work, which may include:
    • Vegetation and habitat assessments
    • Wildlife surveys (birds, amphibians, mammals, insects)
    • Wetland and watercourse evaluations
    • Species at Risk surveys (under appropriate supervision)
  • Collect accurate environmental data using established protocols, GPS units, and digital data collection tools
  • Assist with organizing, reviewing, and summarizing field data for technical reports and mapping
  • Work collaboratively with field crews, project teams, and supervisors
  • Follow AECOM’s health, safety, and environmental policies at all times
  • Demonstrate professionalism, curiosity, and respect when working with colleagues, clients, and local communities

Working Conditions

  • Combination of field-based and office-based work
  • Field assignments may include early starts, extended days, and travel to remote locations
  • Outdoor work in variable weather and terrain
  • Seasonal, full-time summer internship

Qualifications

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from students and recent graduates who are interested in ecology, environmental stewardship, and applied fieldwork.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a post-secondary program in ecology, environmental science, biology, forestry, environmental studies, or a related field
  • Interest in applied ecology, sustainability, and land-based environmental work
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varied weather and physical conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe, high-quality data collection
  • Valid Class G driver’s licence (or equivalent) and willingness to travel to field sites
  • Collaborative mindset and openness to learning through experience and mentorship

We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every qualification.

Assets (preferred, not required)

  • Previous experience with ecological field work, environmental monitoring, or outdoor work
  • Familiarity with Ontario ecosystems or environmental regulations
  • Plant identification skills or wildlife survey experience
  • Experience using GPS units, GIS software, or mobile field data applications
  • First Aid / CPR certification
  • Community involvement or volunteer experience related to environmental or land stewardship
