Full job description

Position Title: Paramedicine Practitioner (formerly Primary Care Paramedic), Fire Ranger Emergency Medical Team

Location: Ontario-wide, deploys out of Barrie and Thunder Bay

Reports To: Superintendent

Employment Type: Temporary contract

Posting Date: 06-Jun-2026

Closing Date: 13-Jun-2026

Schedule: Rotating on-call schedule, with potential deployment to anywhere in Ontario to a maximum of 14 days, plus pick-up opportunities

Pay scale: On-call: $125-180/week; when on deployment: $475-$675/day

Qualifications

1. Required to apply:

Must meet all qualifications as outlined in O. Reg. 257/00 PART III including, but not limited to:

1.1. Possess a diploma in Paramedicine.

1.2. A-EMCA certified by the Ministry of Health, or ability to achieve AEMCA within 210 days of hire date.

1.3. Current BLS level CPR (formerly HCP)

2. Achieve by start date:

2.1. Incident Management System – IMS 100 certificate of completion (https://training.emergencymanagementontario.ca/GTFlex/GTOnline.dll/PublicCourse/COURSENO=COUR2011070415145004500149)

2.2. Possess Ornge Aeromedical Theory certificate, or currently enrolled (https://www.ornge.ca/about-us/programs/aeromedical-theory)

2.3. Possess Aeromedical Theory certificate from Ministry of health, or proof of registration for examination within 210 days of start of employment.

3. Ability to achieve certification under FRO’s controlled medical acts delegation program.

4. Possess physical abilities certificate from OPPAT, Ability Work, Sibley’s, or equivalent issued within last eight months.

5. Ability to exert heavy physical effort required to treat and move patients, sometimes over rugged terrain, deliver medical equipment or sort inventory at health centre, station, and in a vehicle.

6. Good knowledge and application of BLS/ALS Patient Care Standards, related Acts and Regulations, policies and procedures.

7. Ability to effectively communicate with team members, allied agencies, and make justifiable decisions in an emergency.

8. Ability to work independently under stressful situations and exercise sound judgement in an emergency environment.

9. Ability to identify patient treatment needs through adequate assessment and provide appropriate care in accordance with the Basic Life Support Standards and medical delegation policies.

10. Demonstrate competency when using basic computer software such as reporting systems, inventory, email, and word processing.

11. Excellent use of verbal and written English.

12. Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.

13. Criminal Record check free of crimes of moral turpitude.

14. Must possess fully functional smartphone with active data plan.

15. May require the use of a personal or company vehicle while FRO business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely for long periods of time, must hold and maintain a driver's licence that authorizes the person to drive an ambulance, have an acceptable driving record, and personal insurance coverage. Prior commercial driving experience an asset.

Duties

1. While on-call, be ready to respond in FRO Emergency Response Vehicle to any area of the province of Ontario within 48 hours and remain deployed in potentially remote camp environment for up to 14 days. Travel, accommodation, and meals provided.

2. Provide emergency medical care to ill/injured people while ensuring the safe, timely, and appropriate extrication of ill/injured persons via emergency response vehicle or rotor-wing aircraft to land/air ambulance rendezvous sites or medical treatment facilities where circumstances dictate.

3. Perform emergency medical care and controlled acts under the direction of the Medical Director, and in accordance with the patient care standards and procedures set out by FRO, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, legislation, and regulations.

4. Respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, in a safe and secure manner, in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and the applicable policies and procedures.

5. Maintain contact and comply with direction from Superintendent and/or Incident Command at all times regarding vehicle movements, status of equipment, call assignments and the transportation of patients to medical facilities or required destination.

6. Complete, in a timely manner, all required patient and administrative documentation specified in the Ambulance Act, Regulations, standards, company and client policies and practices, including Paramedic Call Report forms. Ensure safekeeping of patient records.

7. Liaise with CACC, families, client staff, police, fire and other health professionals/agencies to ensure relevant patient information is collected.

8. Inspect all equipment at the start and throughout the shift to ensure they are in proper working order, and in a clean and sanitary condition. Carry out housekeeping duties within the medical centre and paramedic vehicles, ensuring the areas are maintained in a clean, sanitary condition.

9. Participate in mandatory training programs, continuing medical education programs, quality assurance programs and company training programs, as required.

10. Perform other related duties as may be required.
