Lead with Purpose. Inspire Innovation. Strengthen Community Health.
Serving as Peel’s Medical Officer of Health (MOH) is more than a role—it’s a chance to shape the future of public health. You’ll be part of a leadership team known for advancing innovative, equity-focused solutions that improve lives and influence provincial and national public health practice.
At Peel Region, we believe in creating a community where everyone thrives. Guided by our values of Care, Courage, Service, and Integrity, we are building a healthier, more inclusive future for 1.5 million residents—one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most diverse populations.
Serving as Peel’s Medical Officer of Health (MOH) is more than a role—it’s a career-defining opportunity to improve lives, strengthen communities, and advance public health practice across Ontario. You will be part of a leadership team known for advancing innovative, equity-focused solutions that improve outcomes locally and influence public health practice provincially and nationally.
Peel Public Health: A Proven Leader in Innovation
- Dental care for seniors – piloted in Peel, now a province-wide program.
- Climate change health assessments – Peel was the first public health unit in Canada to complete one.
- COVID-19 vaccination leadership – from “hot spot” to “beacon of light,” thanks to trusted community engagement and partnerships.
- Digital and AI capacity – leading the sector in applying technology to better serve residents.
The Opportunity
- Provide visionary and collaborative leadership to a team of over 700 public health professionals.
- Champion the Peel Public Health Strategic Plan, advancing health equity, prevention, and upstream solutions to complex challenges.
- Guide and inspire interdisciplinary teams working in areas such as climate change adaptation, opioid risk mitigation, place-based immunization, and digital health innovation.
- Serve as a credible and trusted spokesperson, engaging with Council, community leaders, and the public.
- Lead clinical activities related to communicable disease prevention, control, and health promotion.
- Partner closely with the Commissioner of Health Services and Regional Council, ensuring alignment, accountability, and measurable impact.
- Serve as an integral member of the Health Leadership Team (HLT)—the steering committee for the Health Department (Public Health, Paramedics, Seniors Services, and Health Strategic Planning & Partnerships). Together, the HLT champions collaboration across divisions, sets priorities, and integrates strategies where it makes sense to improve outcomes for residents.
- Build and sustain cross-sector partnerships with governments, health system leaders, and community organizations.
- Model leadership rooted in listening, inclusion, collaboration, and wellbeing.
Candidate Profile
- Medical Degree (MD) with a current license to practice medicine in Ontario (CPSO).
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCP) in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (or equivalent recognized by CPSO).
- Master’s degree in Health Sciences or Public Health preferred.
- Minimum five years in a senior health leadership role with responsibility for public health program development, implementation, and evaluation.
- Significant experience in health-related program and service delivery, including health promotion and disease prevention.
- Demonstrated success in building collaborative partnerships with governments, health system partners, and community organizations.
- Experience advising and influencing elected officials, community boards, and senior decision-makers.
- A collaborative leader who inspires trust, builds bridges, and integrates perspectives across systems.
- A strong advocate for health equity, inclusion, and system transformation.
- Skilled communicator and credible public spokesperson, particularly in high-profile or crisis contexts.
- Emotionally intelligent, with a leadership style that values teamwork, shared accountability, and wellbeing.
Why Peel Region?
- Impact with purpose – lead public health in one of the most diverse, fast-growing regions in Canada.
- Collaboration at every level – work as part of the Health Leadership Team advancing shared priorities across the Health Department.
- Innovation and leadership – a workplace that values creativity, data, and system-level influence.
- Flexibility – hybrid work arrangement with meaningful in-person collaboration balanced with flexibility.
- A values-driven culture – grounded in Care, Courage, Service, and Integrity.
At Peel, your work truly matters. Together, we are building a healthier, more inclusive future for our community—and shaping public health practice well beyond our borders.
In this leadership role, you’ll benefit from the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement that values meaningful in-person connection while supporting balance and adaptability. A minimum of two days per week on-site is expected, with additional in-person presence as operational needs evolve. This approach blends the best of in-person collaboration and hybrid work flexibility, ensuring we remain responsive to both organizational priorities and employee wellbeing.
