Full job description

Family Medicine Hospitalist (Vacant)
Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital is seeking a family physician (0.5FTE) to provide clinical services for subacute patients at the TOH Civic Campus Transitional Care Unit. Although the anticipated start date is January 2027, there may be opportunity to locum sooner if desired.

The Division of Hospital Medicine is renowned for delivery of outstanding care, including the Subacute Hospitalist Program which offers opportunities for expanding clinical skills, continuing professional development, and work-life balance in a supportive clinical environment.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive department supporting a large and diverse academic community. Our members are leaders in advancing clinical care, research excellence, and academic excellence.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.

The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide inpatient care for subacute medical and surgical inpatients. Additionally, as the most responsible physician, the TCU physician plays an integral role in optimizing health holistically, managing acute and chronic disease, assisting in the transition to the community, and preventing re-admission to acute care. The successful candidate will have an affinity for leading the health care team in providing proactive medical care for patients and developing expertise in complex discharge management support.

The successful candidate will complete business day rounding 5 days a week (Monday to Friday) and provide care for 20-25 patients with the expectation to be on-site for at least half a day on rounding days. Each physician is also expected to provide after hours and weekend home call coverage for 1 week every 6 weeks (divided Monday to Thursday, and Friday to Sunday), covering both the General and Civic Campus TCUs.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate strives for excellence in patience care, possesses great interdisciplinary collaboration skills and has subacute hospitalist experience.

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in Family Medicine (CCFP) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Lecturer or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Job Benefits

The income for this position is derived from clinical billings (fee-for-service) and on-call stipend.

Additional Information

The Department of Medicine is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and encourages applications from individuals from equity-deserving groups. Accommodations are available upon request throughout the recruitment process.

Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
