Full job description
The Company
Sonele develops and manufactures medical devices within an ISO 13485 & FDA-registered facility and is also a leading ultrasound OEM manufacturer specializing in high-performance transducers. Our expertise spans all stages of product-to-market, giving us a unique ability to get necessary technologies into consumer hands. Sonele's ultrasound division designs and manufactures medical and industrial transducers offering significant advantages in performance and reliability. We are located near Highway 407 and Woodbine Ave in Markham, ON.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a full-time Laser / Photonics Technician to support our Transducer Manufacturing team. This role is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and testing of transducers and related assemblies using laser and metallization equipment, precision measuring tools, and microscopic assembly techniques.
We are ideally looking for someone with a photonics background, but candidates with a strong mechanical/machining foundation — CNC operation, machining, hands-on troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance — are equally encouraged to apply. This is a hands-on, equipment-focused role suited to someone mechanically inclined who is comfortable working with precision instruments in a lab/manufacturing environment.
Health benefits with premiums fully paid by the company are provided after the probation period. Free on-site parking is available.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabricate, test, assemble, and characterize high-frequency arrays and ultrasound scanning mechanisms following established procedures
- Operate and become proficient with laser machining and sputtering/metallization equipment
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC and precision machining equipment used in fabrication and assembly
- Perform assembly and inspection duties using microscopes, micro-dispensers, and other precision equipment
- Track and maintain inventory of materials required for array production
- Evaluate and contribute to improving current assembly and manufacturing procedures
- Assist in the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of equipment used on the fabrication and assembly lines
- Inform management promptly of deviations from documented manufacturing processes
- Keep management informed on the status of the array manufacturing process
- Work staggered hours/shifts as required, including occasional weekend work and overtime
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or management
Relationships
This position reports directly to the Supervisor, Transducer Manufacturing. Internally, the Laser/Photonics Technician is expected to promote positive and effective working relationships and collaborate to deliver quality service.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Education
- College diploma/certificate in Photonics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering Technology/Technician — preferred
- Equivalent hands-on experience in CNC machining, precision manufacturing, or mechanical troubleshooting will be strongly considered in place of a photonics-specific background
Required Knowledge & Experience (or related)
- Hands-on, mechanically inclined with strong troubleshooting instincts
- Experience with CNC machining, machine setup, and operation is a strong asset
- Handling of small, delicate objects with precision
- Use of precision measuring equipment
- Working under microscopes/stereoscopic microscopes for assembly and inspection
- Knowledge of Health & Safety protocols
Preferred (Asset) Knowledge & Experience
- Operation of excimer gas lasers and laser micro-machining
- Thin-film metal deposition processes and equipment
- Adhesives and high-performance polymers
- Miniature manufacturing/assembly experience
- Handling of fine powders, chemicals, and hazardous materials/waste (storage, disposal, MSDS)
- Cleaning procedures for precision components
- Electrical testing
Skills
- Precision assembly under a microscope
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Excellent troubleshooting skills
- Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent organization, documentation, and prioritization skills
Attributes
- Ability to prepare high-quality, reliable work while working quickly, calmly, and effectively under time pressure
- Ability to prioritize and respond to urgent situations appropriately
- Ability to accurately follow written and oral procedures
- Ability to follow up on issues without guidance
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently when necessary
- Willingness to learn new skills across manufacturing disciplines
