Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Instructor

• Location: Surrey Campus & Local Clinical Sites

• Position Job Title: Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) Instructor

• Reports To: Campus Director / Campus Coordinator

• Compensation: $33.00 – $35.00 per hour

• Hours: Maximum 25 hours per week

• Schedule:

  • In-person classes: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM

  • Practicum visits: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

    
    

Purpose

The purpose of the Instructor is to contribute to the academic success of students and to the success of the Employer in achieving its statement of purpose.

Specific Responsibilities

The Instructor will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the Company:

• Dealing with students, staff and other instructors in a professional, courteous and helpful manner

• Delivering instruction that meets module and program objectives as set out in the curriculum

• Preparing lesson plans and teaching aids that utilize a variety of teaching methods which will promote the attainment of desirable goals of students

• Discussing students’ progress with them individually and as a group

• Explaining the course outline and expectations to students

• Participating in the development and evaluation of curriculum and instructional materials, as required

• Informing the Campus Director or Campus Coordinator of any significant changes or problems that arise during a module

• Attending Instructors’ meetings, as required

• Possessing a clear understanding of, and upholding, the Employer’s policies and procedures relating to students and instructors

• Cooperating with the administration staff in the performance of their duties

• Completing required forms and records and submitting them to administration staff in a timely manner

• Maintaining relevant industry skills and knowledge

• Perform the Instructor duties and at all times conduct themselves with the utmost attention to professionalism, integrity and respect for students, the program, colleagues, curriculum and the College as is fitting of a person in a position of trust with respect to the students

• Participate in teaching evaluation and performance reviews

• Take and submit attendance records for each student in the Course throughout the terms

• Provide and update online course materials to Campus Director, material must be kept current and consistent with the latest edition of the textbook

• Complete marking of the final examination and submit final marks within five working days after the last day of the course

• Attend the Orientation Day, if feasible, at the beginning of each academic year

• Arrange make-up sessions for teaching hours lost through illness and other unavoidable absences

• The Instructor may wish to add to, update and/or modify the course materials to better suit their teaching of the course. The Instructor is expected to preserve for the College’s use, and provide to the Director additional, updated or modified material used within the class. Major revisions should be approved by the Director.

• To become familiar with and to comply with all of the policies and procedures, as reasonably adopted and amended from time to time by the College. The Instructor acknowledges and agrees that College may amend its policies, procedures, duties of the Instructor and the terms of this Agreement with written notice

  
  

Position Requirements

Competencies:

To be successful in the Instructor position, individuals must be committed to developing, maintaining and demonstrating the following:

• Relevant industry skills and knowledge relating to the area of instruction

• Advanced oral and written communication skills, including presentation and group facilitation

• Ability to motivate and inspire students

• Demonstrate and encourage high standards of behaviour, a professional attitude and commitment to quality service

• Ability to work cooperatively with other instructors and staff

• Ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of students, to provide feedback and treat students equitably

• Teach the prescribed curriculum and courses as approved

• Commitment to remain current in area of study including ongoing professional development and continuous improvement

Education and Experience:

• Degree, diploma or certification from a recognized university or college

• Two or more years’ experience in a related field

• Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist Designation

• Instructional experience is an asset

• Satisfy specific position/qualifications as prescribed in program design and program approval for the instruction of the courses
