Andrologist/Laboratory Assistant

Department: Laboratory

Reports To: Clinic Lead – Nursing and Laboratory & Clinic Manager - Surrey

Location: Surrey Clinic

Work Schedule: 7.5 hours/day, 5 days per week, weekends as operationally required.

Overview:

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose, and Commitment of Olive Fertility Centre:

The Andrologist/Laboratory Assistant is to assume full responsibility for all samples collected, received, and analyzed in accordance with established laboratory standard operating procedures. Equally important, as a member of a small centre, the Andrologist works collaboratively with all members of the team performing a wide variety of tasks.

Key Areas of Involvement:

Specimen Collection & Laboratory Duties

· Perform sperm profiles and sperm wash according to written laboratory procedures and protocols.

· Confirms identification and prepares patients for specified tests; provides collection instruction to patients for on- and off-site collections, accepts specimens in accordance with established procedures, labels specimens with required information.

· Strictly follows all safety rules and regulations including Sharps, blood borne pathogens, biological safety and exposure control plans.

· Prepares collection room for semen collection and cleans the room after each patient

· Receives specimens, spins down and splits specimens into different containers, sorts and labels for testing, logs data into patient database. Stores analyzed specimens and discards outdated specimens as directed in accordance with established facility procedures.

· Performs daily Quality Control on all lab equipment.

· Assists with ordering/unpacking laboratory supplies.

· Assists with tasks related to the Diagnostic Accreditation Program (DAP) where necessary.

· Arranges for shipment of specimens to external labs. Completes forms, packages specimen in accordance with safe procedures and regulations. Contacts courier for pick up.

· Assists with documentation of phlebotomy samples, collecting and printing requisitions and labels, uploading documentation to EMR, preparing samples for shipping and documentation of shipping and billing logs. Supports the phlebotomy team by assisting in direct patient care.

· Set ups, adjusts, troubleshoots, maintains, and cleans laboratory equipment.

· Answers phones for Laboratory related inquiries.

· Chart, label, and requisition preparation.

· Coordinates semen profile appointments and provides instruction to patients via phone or email.

Medical Device Reprocessing Duties

· In collaboration with other staff assists with the cleaning, wrapping, and autoclaving of reusable instruments.

· Participates in tasks related to the Physicians Office Medical Device Reprocessing Assessment (POMDRA).

· Maintains records such as autoclave logs, cleaning logs, sterilization records etc.

Other duties

· Assists with other administrative and clinical tasks as operationally required.

· Maintains punctuality, arrives at work in the morning allowing time to change into scrubs and enter the andrology laboratory on time.

· Andrologists work is very demanding and requires maximum concentration and presence of mind. All andrologists must be cognizant of arriving to work rested, alert, and energetic.

· Wear scrubs only within the premises of the clinic. Coming from home, going home or leaving the clinic while in scrubs is unacceptable and prohibited.

Qualifications:

Education, Training & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in biology or the biological sciences from an accredited university.

· Certification in Medical Device Reprocessing is an asset. If not certified, Olive Fertility Centre will provide and pay for training for exceptional candidates.

· Previous lab or healthcare experience is an asset.

Skills & Abilities

· Empathetic and respectful to patients and colleagues.

· Ability to put patients at ease.

· Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory testing, techniques, methods, and procedures is an asset.

· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team

· Ability to work independently, prioritize issues and workload, and complete assigned work

· Ability to operate related equipment, including computerized information systems.

· Acute awareness of confidentiality and the need to keep all patients and personnel-based discussions to areas away from patients.

· Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
