Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

About The Position

The Role

The Licensed Practical Nurse at Skin Health & Wellness Centre has a critical role in educating patients about skin conditions, counselling patients on dermatology treatments, and assisting dermatologists with medical/surgical procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse also helps perform skin exams, patient evaluations and records medical history and laboratory results. Attention to detail and the desire to provide exceptional patient care are critical to this position and supporting the mandate of the Skin Health & Wellness Centre.

Job Type:

This is a full-time position. Availability in the evenings and weekends may be required.

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed

Responsibilities:

  • Educates patients on treatments and provides counseling on preventive health care
  • Assists the Dermatologist with procedures such as biopsies and surgeries
  • Provides pre- and post-operative care for clients who are undergoing treatment for a variety of skin conditions and diseases
  • Participates in triage and collecting assessment data in accordance with clinic policy
  • Practices safety procedures, collects specimens and sends specimens for assessment, in accordance with clinic protocols
  • Conducts patient appointments and takes medical histories
  • Book patients for specialist consultant assessments and educate patient, and/or caregiver attending the appointment on what to expect from the appointment, and what/how to prepare for the initial assessment
  • Performs tasks delegated by a Physician or Manager
  • Documents patient’s charts
  • Prepare patient’s medical history from Netcare (event history, lab flow sheet, medication list history, home care info, consults, pathology reports, diagnostic imaging reports, etc.)
  • Maintain rooms between patients (cleaning)
  • Assist with booking follow-up appointments when directed by team members
  • Receive, scan and distribute incoming mail, labs, consults, prescription requests, special authorization requests and diagnostic imaging reports to the team
  • Triage physician referrals based on reason for consultation to assist patient care coordinators
  • Assist in the training of new clinic staff in shared duties

Required Education:

  • Completion and certification from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program
  • Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA)

License/Certification:

  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / First Aid Certification / Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) (REQUIRED)
  • First Aid Certification (preferred)
  • LPN/RPN (preferred)
  • CPR Certification (preferred)

Required Experience, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Previous nursing experience is considered an asset
  • Previous experience in a customer service role is considered an asset
  • All LPNs are expected to demonstrate understanding and practice as outlined by the CLPNA
  • Knowledge of dermatological surgeries and procedures; ability to perform asepsis and sterile techniques
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques of surgical tools; anesthesia methods and protocols
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Critical thinking and judgement in a clinic-based environment
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Knowledge of patient registration procedures and documentation
  • Knowledge of charting and patient care best practices
  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) certification or experience (preferred)

Background Check:

A clear Criminal Background check, inclusive of a vulnerable sector search, is required to start. If you have resided outside of Calgary in the past 12 months, you will need to contact the local police or RCMP detachment in your previous residential municipality to be able to obtain a full report.
