Full job description

The Compounding Pharmacy Assistant will assist the pharmacist with providing safe and appropriate pharmacy services to our patients in accordance with the policies and procedures of Pharmacy.ca, the province’s professional standards, and other regulatory entities. This position works in the compounding laboratory, compounding medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

Position Responsibilities

  • Accurately compound prescription medications, including creams, gels, suspensions, suppositories, and transdermal formulations.
  • Operate and maintain capsule filling equipment, Profiller 100 and Profiller 300capsule machines, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and proper equipment handling.
  • Conduct manual capsule filling with steady hands and consistency
  • Perform batch production of capsules and tablets
  • Weigh, measure, and process ingredients accurately according to compounding records and established procedures.
  • Compound using various methods: direct API, crushed tablets, finished capsules, and slow-release formulations using dual excipients
  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to compounding processes, equipment operation, cleaning, fill weight verification, gowning/de-gowning, accordance to established policies and procedures
  • Complete all required documentation in accordance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP), including compounding records, cleaning logs, and quality assurance documentation.
  • Ensure that all ingredients in each compound are verified by a pharmacist before compounding the medication
  • Package and label compounded medications accurately using appropriate containers and labeling requirements.
  • Ensure quality at every compounding step and execute quality assurance procedures on assigned randomly sampled scripts and document results following standards
  • Maintaining inventory of ingredients and packaging components
  • Properly operate, verify, clean, and maintain compounding equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform non-sterile compounding in accordance with NAPRA guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant compounding area always, including completion of cleaning activities and maintenance of cleaning logs.
  • Take and follow verbal instructions accurately and comply with them without supervision.

Work Environment and Job Complexity

Non-sterile compounding is performed in a separate, specifically designated space that is appropriate for compounding and maintained to ensure the quality and integrity of the final preparation. The Compounding Assistant must tie back hair, perform good hand hygiene, wear a clean laboratory coat that is reserved for compounding and must wear powder free gloves. This position requires long periods of standing and may require lifting, bending and handling of heavy equipment.

Personal protective equipment must be worn and the employee must take reasonable measures to prevent cross-contamination and to protect themselves from chemical exposure.

  • Must be able to meet physical demands including lifting 10-51 pounds (4.5- 23 kg), moving heavy equipment, and standing for long periods.

Job Knowledge and Education

  • Post secondary education in pharmacy, chemistry or a related field.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in pharmacy compounding.
  • Knowledge of different dosage forms (i.e., solid oral including capsules, tablets, oral liquids, topical, transdermal, etc.)
  • Familiarity with tablet compression equipment is an asset
  • Familiarity with GLPs, GMP, GDP, and SOPs and gowning procedures.

Job type : Part-time

Location Preference: Candidates residing in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are preferred.

Pay: $20.00-$22.00 per hour
