Full job description
Who we are
At WELLSTAR, we are committed to reshaping Canadian healthcare by leveraging technology to address the administrative burdens that pull physicians away from their true calling—patient care. Our mission is to support providers and patients, shifting the emphasis back to quality, timeliness, and positive outcomes. With a comprehensive suite of technology solutions, we have successfully helped thousands of providers adopt and benefit from modern, interoperable technologies that improve patient outcomes and system efficiency.
Whether you are in research and development, administration, communications, operations leadership, or technology, joining us now is an opportunity to play a critical role in transforming how healthcare is managed and experienced in Canada.
DoctorCare was acquired by WELLSTAR in 2020, and we now operate as part of Canada’s leading healthcare technology ecosystem, benefiting from the comprehensive resources and expertise of a company that serves over 40% of practitioners nationwide.
The opportunity
DoctorCare is hiring a Medical Billing Specialist to join the Customer Operations team. As our new Medical Billing Specialist, you will play a key role in helping physician practices maximize billing accuracy, resolve complex claim issues, and deliver exceptional service to our customers. Working across medical billing, customer support, and practice optimization, you will investigate billing questions, identify revenue opportunities, liaise with the Ministry of Health, and help physicians navigate Ontario's healthcare billing requirements with confidence. You will serve as a trusted billing advisor, independently managing complex claims, identifying reimbursement opportunities, and providing expert guidance to physician practices.
Success in this role is about more than processing claims. You will build trusted relationships with customers, solve problems proactively, and contribute ideas that improve how we deliver our services. While experience with medical billing is valuable, we are equally interested in candidates who bring strong communication skills, curiosity, initiative, and a commitment to delivering an outstanding customer experience. Comprehensive training on our billing processes and systems will be provided.
This is a full-time hybrid role based in Toronto, with an expectation of working in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
What’s in it for you
Learn from industry experts. Whether you already have medical billing experience or are bringing transferable skills from healthcare, customer service, or a technology environment, you will receive hands-on training and coaching from experienced professionals. You will develop expertise in Ontario medical billing, physician practice operations, and healthcare technology while building skills that can support a long-term career in healthcare services.
Make a meaningful impact. Every claim you process, question you resolve, and opportunity you identify helps physician practices operate more efficiently and maximize the revenue they have earned. Your work will directly support healthcare providers, allowing them to spend more time focused on patient care and less time navigating administrative complexity.
Be part of a growing organization. As part of the WELL Health family, DoctorCare continues to invest in technology, service innovation, and practice optimization. You will join a collaborative team where new ideas are encouraged, process improvements are valued, and you will have the opportunity to contribute to initiatives that shape how we support thousands of physicians across Canada.
How you will make an impact:
- Own complex medical billing activities. You will Independently manage billing submissions, reconciliations, rejected claims, and complex billing scenarios while ensuring compliance with OHIP policies.
- Act as the primary billing advisor for physician practices. You will build trusted relationships with physicians by providing expert advice, resolving escalated billing concerns, and identifying opportunities to improve reimbursement. Whether resolving claim discrepancies, supporting government documentation, or answering service inquiries, you will deliver a positive experience that gives customers confidence in our expertise.
- Drive revenue optimization. You will analyze physician billing trends, proactively identify missed revenue opportunities, recommend billing improvements, and resolve complex claim issues requiring interpretation of Ministry policies.
- Provide subject matter expertise. You will stay current on OHIP policies, Ministry updates, and billing changes while sharing knowledge and coaching colleagues on best practices.
- Contribute to continuous improvement. You will share customer insights, recommend process improvements, and look for ways to make our services more efficient and effective. As DoctorCare continues to grow, your ideas and observations will help shape how we support physicians and evolve our service offering.
What you bring:
- The medical billing expertise. You have experience working with Ontario medical billing, OHIP claims, EMRs, or healthcare administration. While direct medical billing experience is an asset rather than a requirement, you understand healthcare workflows, can quickly learn new systems, and confidently apply new knowledge to increasingly complex billing scenarios.
- The analytical problem-solving. You enjoy investigating discrepancies, identifying root causes, and finding practical solutions. You can manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional accuracy.
- The attention to detail. You are highly organized and take pride in producing accurate work. Whether you're managing data, reviewing information, or balancing multiple priorities, you work carefully and consistently, recognizing that even small details can have a meaningful impact.
- The technical confidence. You are comfortable working with technology and quickly learning new software. Experience with EMRs, Microsoft Excel, Salesforce, medical billing platforms, or other healthcare technologies is an asset, but not required. We will provide training on our systems and processes.
- The ownership mindset. You work well with minimal supervision, manage competing priorities effectively, and know when to collaborate or escalate issues. You're curious, resourceful, and adaptable, with the confidence to ask questions, learn new systems, and continuously improve the way you work.
- The customer partnership. You build trusted relationships through clear communication, professionalism, and a consultative approach. You take ownership of issues and follow them through to resolution.
- The collaborative mindset. You build strong working relationships and value teamwork. You communicate openly, share knowledge, and contribute to a positive, supportive environment while working collaboratively to deliver the best possible outcomes for physicians and their practices.
What you can expect from our interview process:
- A virtual interview with a Talent Advisor to discuss your interest in joining DoctorCare and your experience. The conversation will be recorded using BrightHire, an AI-powered interview platform. More details will be shared when you are invited to interview.
- A virtual or in-person interview with the service delivery managers and/or Director of Customer Operations focused on your skills and experience, team fit and the opportunity to learn more about the role and DoctorCare.
Compensation
The salary for this position is $50K. The salary will be determined based on several factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and the needs of the organization. At WELLSTAR, we are committed to fair and equitable compensation and aim to provide a competitive salary that reflects the value and expertise of the successful candidate.
Apply now.
Interested in applying but worried you don't have it all? At WELLSTAR, we know not everyone gains their experience following a traditional path. If you share our values, want to make a difference in healthcare technology solutions, and meet 70% of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply. Express your interest here.
WELLSTAR is committed to supporting a diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace. We welcome and celebrate the diversity of applicants and team members across ability, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and perspective.
