About Community Apothecary

Community Apothecary is an independent, no-public-access pharmacy that offers a hard-working yet low-stress environment. We are committed to delivering exceptional, harm reduction-oriented care to our community. Our collaborative, multidisciplinary team includes Emergency Medical Responders, Nurses, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Family Doctors, Psychiatrists, Mental Health Workers, and Community Mental Health Teams.

EMR Opportunity

We are seeking a full-time Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) to join our team in Burnaby and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). In this role, you will deliver medications from the pharmacy to various Assisted Living Facilities in the DTES. Duties will also include pharmacy assistant work in the dispensary, as well as working directly with individuals living in supported housing who face mental health and substance use challenges. This will entail medication administration, Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) witnessing, patient engagement, and overdose (OD) recognition and response. This position is integral to our harm reduction approach and offers the chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of community members.

Responsibilities

  • Medication Delivery & OAT Witnessing: Deliver medications to clients in supported housing and witness OAT (Opioid Agonist Therapy) and Prescribed Alternatives (PA) dosing, ensuring safe and proper medication administration.
  • Dispensary Duties: Prepare and organize prescriptions, reconcile physical products against records, receive inventory, etc.
  • Patient Engagement: Provide compassionate, respectful engagement with clients, building rapport to support medication adherence and overall well-being.
  • Overdose Recognition & Response: Monitor clients for signs of overdose or other medical emergencies; respond quickly and effectively, including administering naloxone and calling for additional medical help when necessary.
  • Documentation: Maintain thorough, confidential documentation of medication administration, client interactions, and any notable changes in client health or behavior.
  • Team Communication: Communicate and collaborate with the pharmacy team and other healthcare providers regarding client progress, medication issues, and any concerns – ensuring continuity of care in a team-based environment.

Qualifications

  • Valid Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) licence/certification in BC (Emergency Medical Assistant Level I)required
  • Valid BC Driver's License with a clean driving abstract - required
  • Possession of a clean, working vehicle - required
  • Experience or interest in working with individuals with mental health and/or substance use challenges – asset
  • Empathetic and comfortable working within a harm reduction framework
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team

Benefits

  • Starting wage: $22.00 per hour
  • Paid time off (6%)
