Medical Coder

Our branch is responsible for registering all vital events in Ontario, including births, marriages, deaths, stillbirths, adoptions, and name changes, and ensuring the accurate and secure stewardship of these essential records. We also produce vital event certificates and certified copies of registrations. This impactful work allows us to connect with Ontarians through key milestones of their lives. Our commitment is to provide reliable and efficient services to the residents of Ontario, safeguarding the integrity of vital event registration records.

Please note: This position requires you to report in person to the onsite work location (189 Red River Rd., Thunder Bay) five (5) days per week.
About the job
Although everyday may look different, as part of our team, you will:- code and verify death and stillbirth registrations determining the underlying cause.
- interpret causes not in conformity with International Classification of Diseases.
- correspond with physicians, coroners, hospitals and other organizations to obtain or clarify information.
- batch and match incomplete death/stillbirth documents.
- update various manuals and indexes.
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge
You have:- knowledge of medical terminology and experience coding using the International Classification of Diseases and other related resources.
- the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Vital Statistics Act).
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You have:- oral and written communication skills to prepare correspondence and liaise with physicians, coroners, hospitals and other individuals.
- tact and diplomacy to deal with internal and external clients.
- customer service and conflict resolution skills.
- the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
You can:- examine documents for completeness/accuracy and determine the acceptability of documents/evidence.
- investigate and compile information to make decisions (e.g. resolving discrepancies in cause of death codes).
Administrative Skills
You have:- organizational and time management skills to multitask and prioritize your tasks in a busy office environment.
- experience with various software applications (Database, Word, Excel, and electronic mail) to perform administrative duties.
