Level Definition

Positions at this level perform a range of management duties in support of an established research center. Works with a high level of autonomy and minimal direct supervision.

Typical Duties

The Research Manager (RM) will be involved in and actively drive teambuilding and teamwork processes, benefiting from the mentorship of senior researchers and community leaders. The Research Manager will act as a core element of the interdisciplinary research team and collaborator on multiple research projects.

The RM is critical to meeting the project’s needs. This person will:

· Operationalize 2 recently CIHR funded, international randomized controlled trial as well as a new American thoracic society funded RCT

· Build and maintain relationships with partner agencies and collaborators (investigators, fellows, sponsors, external societies, funding agencies, institutions)

· Coordinate, track and facilitate project activities, towards achieving research outcomes

· Actively participate in the leadership team and the management team, and coordinate the work of these groups

· Oversee the work

· Prepare research ethics applications and amendments

· Prepare and Review research project

Scope of Work and Contract documents

· Ensure effective communication among all stakeholders in the project and build an effective public presence

· Prepare and Contribute to research project proposals, manuscripts; academic and community publications and presentations

· Provide functional supervision of RCs and RAs; prioritizing and monitoring work

· Act as a resource and role model; Motivate, supports, encourages, guides and influences staff

· Provide technical & procedure guidance

· Delegate assignments

· Provide orientation

· Provide on-going coaching

· Monitor vacation, absenteeism, overtime & leaves of absence

· Identifies, facilitates and provides opportunities for staff/professional/skills enhancement

· Establishes, communicates and monitors performance expectations

· Identifies/resolves complaints, conflicts, concerns and problems

Qualifications

· Master’s degree in Health Sciences or related field – Epidemiology/Health Research Methods

· Experience 3 to 5 years practical and related experience and/or 1 year on-the-job training required.

· Minimum 2 years clinical trial management experience and equivalent experience in relevant healthcare field.

· Experience & strengths in working with people from diverse sectors, communities and organizations (including excellent facilitation skills);

· Effective project management

· Excellent communication skills (both in academic writing and presenting, and in developing resources, presentations);

· Experience working with health research methodology (Evidence Synthesis, GRADE, Guideline Development) and the related software and platforms (GRADEPro, PanelVoice, Covidence, Reference management software – EndNote etc).

· Experience coordinating sponsor led and investigator-initiated national and international clinical trials; including site and data management, regulatory submissions, and clinical trial agreement negotiations.

· Research data management expertise and experience with related software and platforms (REDCap, iData, ROME, Excel, etc)

· Proven grant writing experience and coordination of successful submissions (CIHR, HAHSO, PSI) and other non-traditional funding streams.

· Budget management experience

Supervision Exercised

Supervision of research staff (RCs, RAs) to ensure performance to project specification and job description. Providing training and support. Full responsibility and primary accountability to supervise an assigned compliment of staff. May provide professional Practice Leadership with decision-making authority on human resource decisions.

Provides work guidance on the solution to specific problems for Research Center members/associates (Clinicians/Fellows/Researchers). Typically plans workflow for projects, checks accuracy of work, and ensure quality of work.

Collaborates with multiple project stakeholders and various levels within and outside the Research Institute of St. Joe’s and t. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

Decision Making Authority

Decisions on budgets, protocols, and procedures. Making necessary administrative actions and obtaining necessary approvals from institution, ethics, sponsors, collaborators, etc.
