Job Summary
The ideal candidate will provide exceptional chairside assistance, ensure infection control, and support the overall patient experience. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and a collaborative, team-focused approach. Your daily responsibilities directly impact patient safety, comfort, and the smooth operation of the dental practice.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical & Chairside Assisting
  • Assist dentists and restorative hygienists during all procedures
  • Anticipate the dentist’s needs and remain prepared at all times.
  • Initiate and take radiographs as prescribed by the DDS.
  • Take alginate impressions for patients.
  • Take shades for crown and bridge work.
  • Apply topical anesthetic (Level II).
  • Place rubber dams (Level II).
  • Mix clinical materials.
  • Assist hygienists during periodontal charting.
  • Provide written and verbal post-operative instructions.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians of pediatric patients, ensuring consent is obtained and instructions are clearly explained.
  • Reassure and relax patients while building positive patient relationships.

Charting & Treatment Coordination

  • Audit patient charts the day before or the morning of appointments to confirm scheduled treatment.
  • Review charts for outstanding or recommended treatment and communicate appropriately with patients.
  • Chart accurately and enter all treatment rendered.
  • Ensure treatment notes are completed and work with the dentist to ensure to sign off on all clinical documentation.
  • Support treatment acceptance and promote recommended dentistry in alignment with practice standards.

Daily Operational Responsibilities

  • Complete initial setup of dentist treatment rooms and the sterilization bay.
  • Greet and seat all restorative patients.
  • Support patient flow and assist in keeping the schedule on track.
  • Perform room setup and breakdown for all procedures.
  • Break down and sterilize DDS rooms after procedures and at the end of the day.
  • Close down all treatment rooms after the final patients and ensure instruments are properly sterilized.

Infection Prevention & Equipment Maintenance

  • Follow all office infection control protocols and IPAC guidelines.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and operatories.
  • Clean, sterilize, lubricate, and maintain dental handpieces.
  • Flush dental unit waterlines/hoses daily with approved disinfectant solutions.
  • Maintain sterilization areas in a clean, organized, and compliant manner.
  • Assist with all sterilization duties as required.

Expanded & Secondary Responsibilities

  • Perform hygiene expanded duties including polish and fluoride (Level II, where applicable).
  • Assist with emergency patient care when required (spare chair support).
  • Support other dental assistants when time permits.
  • Restock supplies in treatment rooms.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and functionality of all operatories and equipment.

Team Responsibilities & Professional Conduct

  • Maintain positive, respectful communication with patients and team members.
  • Assist other team members when time permits to support clinic efficiency.
  • Participate in monthly team meetings.
  • Engage in required continuing education and professional development.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to support operational needs.
  • To be a strong team player, the Dental Assistant II Level is expected to;
  • Work collaboratively for the success of the practice rather than individual gain.
  • Be flexible and knowledgeable in other areas of the office to assist when needed.
  • Adapt positively to change.
  • Respect each team member’s role and provide encouragement and support.
  • Contribute to restoring workflow efficiency when the office is not running smoothly.
  • Communicate promptly and professionally if issues or concerns arise.

Experience

  • Prior experience working in a dental clinic setting is required.
  • Knowledge of dental assisting practices including four-handed dentistry, anatomy knowledge, and infection control procedures.
  • Familiarity with dental software platforms (i.e. Tracker) is required
  • Experience with pediatric dentistry is a plus.
  • Certification or training in X-ray techniques and medical imaging is desirable.
  • Understanding of medical terminology related to dentistry and general healthcare practices is beneficial.

Qualifications

  • Dental Assistant Level II certification in Ontario is required
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of IPAC standards and clinical best practices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to patient safety and care.

Work Conditions

  • Clinical environment with chairside assisting
  • Exposure to dental instruments, materials, and clinical equipment
  • Travel may be required between company locations
  • Occasional overtime may be required
  • Must be fully permitted to live and work in Canada
