The Brant County SPCA is a not- for-profit charitable organization that serves Brantford and Brant County. We have been providing animal protection and sheltering services for over 50 years. The mission of the Brant County SPCA is dedicated to all animals through prevention, promotion and protection. Our clear vision aims to provide a compassionate and safe environment for all animals in Brant County and beyond. Animal Care Team Member – L1 – Part Time Contract Position

About the Position

Reports to the Manager of Animal Care Programs & Customer Experience: the primary responsibility of the Animal Care Team Member L1 is to ensure all essential needs of the animals under the care of the Brant County SPCA are met according to standard policies and procedures. The Team Member is responsible for performing initial health checks on all animals upon arrival and providing ongoing care to all animals entering and exiting the shelter. This position requires the Team Member to pay close attention to detail while working both independently, as well as within a dynamic team setting. The Team Member will take care of a variety of species of animals and will perform assigned tasks to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals in the care of the Brant County SPCA.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute each responsibility as outlined in the standards and protocols of the Brant County SPCA
  • Ensure the health and safety of each animal

o Complete animal health exams, vaccinations and administer medications

  • Complete animal’s daily dietary and medical needs
  • Provide grooming, bathing, walking, and care to nursing animals
  • Provide daily enrichment
  • Clean and sanitize animal toys, linens, kennels, dishes, carriers etc.
  • Assists with laundry
  • Recording all animal records into software program; example but not limited to; vaccines, medications, treatments, memos, pet photos etc.

o Ensure work areas are clean and tidy

o Make necessary phone calls pertaining to animals under the care of the Brant County SPCA

  • Assist owners of missing pets to create lost/found reports, doing walk-throughs
  • Sort and stock all inventory throughout the workplace
  • Accept, sort and put away all donations
  • Assist other team members and volunteers as required
  • Assist at Vet Clinic as Surgical Assistant L1

Position Requirements

· Works independently and in a team environment.

· Practices open communication with all co-workers.

· Responsible for the completion of their daily work duties.

· Understanding of animal’s needs and temperaments

· Completes training programs and other duties as assigned.

· Makes decisions based on the understanding of Brant County SPCA’s standardized techniques, policies and procedures.

· Works in alignment with the Brant County SPCA Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles

Health and Safety Responsibilities

· Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations

· Works in compliance with Brant County SPCA Health & Safety procedures and protocols

· Engage in disease control by implementing safe work practices

· Maintain a friendly, clean and safe work environment as per standards both in the shelter and on the entire property

Working Conditions

· Position involves repetitive physical activity such as lifting up to 20 lbs. or more and climbing of indoor step ladders.

· The incumbent must be aware of unexpected circumstances and have the capability for dealing with unexpected animal or human behaviour

· Work may include indoor and outdoor activities in all weather conditions.

· The incumbent will be required to work with chemical products. WHIMIS training will be provided.

· Required to work with various species of animals

· Work will include weekend shifts

Experience and Qualifications

· High School Diploma or equivalent

· Post-Secondary Education in Animal Care/Handling, or equivalent in experience an asset

· Police Clearance Certificate is required and must be maintained
