Full job description

The Veterinary Assistant (VA) at WAVES provides essential support to ensure the well-being and recovery of animals receiving emergent and critical care. As an integral member of the ER team, you will work closely with our emergency Veterinarians and Technicians to deliver high-quality animal care and maintain a safe and clean environment for our patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in providing care to animals in the ER, ensuring their physical and medical needs are met.
  • Monitor patients closely and record vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen levels.
  • Provide comfort and companionship to patients by ensuring bedding is clean and comfortable and providing enrichment, handling and interaction.
  • Maintain a clean and hygienic environment by regularly cleaning cages, kennels, surfaces, and equipment.
  • Assist in accurately maintaining medical records, including recording patient information, treatments administered, observation notes, and any changes in condition.
  • Assist in the proper maintenance and cleaning of medical equipment.
  • Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other support staff to coordinate patient care, share information, and provide updates on patient status or concerns.
  • Maintain open and professional communication with clients, providing updates on their pet's condition as directed by the veterinary team.
  • Provide assistance across other hospital departments as needed. This role requires flexibility and collaboration, offering support to other services during times when workload allows for it and another department requires additional help

Schedule:

  • 12-hour shifts
  • 36 hours per week
  • Weekend and Evening or Overnight availability is required
  • Some overtime as required

Requirements:

  • Previous experience as an Veterinary Assistant required.
  • Strong knowledge of animal behavior, husbandry, and basic veterinary medical terminology.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize tasks, and work efficiently in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well within a team.
  • Physical stamina to lift and restrain animals as necessary.
  • Available to work flexible hours

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $21.00-$24.00 per hour
