Full job description

Acres Animal Hospital is an independently owned and operated small animal veterinary hospital. We are looking for a part time or full time veterinary assistant-receptionist to join our team, to work Monday or Tuesday to Friday ( 4 or 5 days per week) on a regular basis. This person will be a friendly individual who can work both independently and in a team to provide individualized veterinary medical care to our patients, and excellent customer service to our clients. As both conventional medicine and alternative medicine are offered to our patients, there are opportunities to learn about many pathways to healing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • answering the telephone (2 lines) and replying to messages, logging & keeping notes
  • checking email messages and replying, logging & keeping notes
  • scheduling and confirming appointments
  • maintaining a clean and welcoming reception area
  • greeting clients as they enter, in a friendly and welcoming manner
  • collecting a detailed patient history and other information
  • assisting the veterinarian in providing veterinary medical care to patients
  • restraining patients (dogs and cats) for examination and care
  • assisting in the preparation of medications for treatment of patients
  • maintaining detailed and accurate medical records and logs
  • cleaning and disinfecting exam rooms, treatment areas, and kennels
  • cleaning and maintaining instruments and equipment
  • communicating with pet owners, helping to educate them on their pet's care
  • invoicing and taking payments
  • pet food sales

Qualifications

  • high school diploma and successful completion of college veterinary assistant program or relevant university degree
  • animal handling ability with dogs and cats to restrain for procedures
  • math skills to perform patient care calculations and for cashier duties
  • people skills: effective verbal and written communications
  • telephone skills: ability to handle two lines
  • computer skills proficient to create electronic medical records and use veterinary software
  • able to work independently and in a team
  • quick learner
  • accurate attention to detail
  • able to lift 50 pounds
  • knowledge of alternative medicine preferred
  • compassionate and caring

Acres Animal Hospital is open Mondays to Fridays from 12 noon to 6pm, and employees are typically scheduled between 11:45am-7pm. There are no weekend, overnight, or early morning shifts. We are closed on all statutory and common public holidays. We are looking for someone to work full time Monday to Friday, or part time Tuesday to Friday.
