Location : ALS Environmental, Burlington

Reports to : Organic Prep Supervisor

About the Position :

The Laboratory Assistant will assist with routine laboratory functions, such as preparing client samples for analysis and routine lab maintenance. You will be working independently and in a team environment, with an emphasis on providing quality and efficient service to internal clients.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Process samples in a timely manner, to meet client Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;

  • Sample preparation; (e.g. screening, homogenization, subsampling, etc)

  • Reagent and chromatographic column preparation;

  • Archive and disposal of samples;

  • Maintain clean workspace (ie. Glassware, waste disposal, sample organization and distribution);

  • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;

  • Glassware, bottle and material preparation and assembly;

  • Operate basic preparation equipment

  • Operate basic lab support equipment

  • Perform general archiving, Clean-up and washing of materials;

  • May assist with training;

  • Review and provide input for SOP's;

  • Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;

  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);

  • Basic user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with basic computer skills;

  • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment;

  • Well organized, with the ability to meet strict deadlines;

  • Strong attention to detail;

  • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions;

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of high school or equivalent;

  • Degree or technical diploma in chemistry or related science discipline as asset;

Physical Demands

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;

  • This position requires a person to stand up to 8 hours per day;

  • This position requires a person to lift up to 30 lbs. on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

  • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;

  • This position requires a person to be clean shaven in order to safely wear a solvent respirator;

  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

  • An estimated hourly pay of $21.01CAD at the time of posting. Individual compensation is determined by factors such as job-related skills, relevant experience, education and/or training.
