Full job description

Hello, I'm Simon Mathé, Recruitment Consultant at FED ManuTech, specializing in engineering, industrial engineering, and manufacturing recruitment. I am currently recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer for an innovative Montreal-based technology company that develops and commercializes next-generation industrial Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). You will join a multidisciplinary R&D team where you will contribute to the development of power electronics products, from enclosure design through prototype validation and industrialization. If you enjoy designing real products and working in an environment where your ideas have a direct impact, this opportunity is for you.

YOUR MISSIONS

As part of a multidisciplinary R&D team, you will contribute to the development of industrial Variable Frequency Drives by taking ownership of the mechanical design of their enclosures, from concept through prototype validation and preparation for manufacturing

Your main responsibilities will include:
  • Design VFD enclosures while integrating thermal, manufacturing, assembly, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements.
  • Develop 3D models and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks, including detailed drawings, tolerances, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Design sheet metal and injection-molded plastic components using Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
  • Perform or support thermal simulations (CFD) to optimize heat dissipation and overall product performance.
  • Design, assemble, and improve prototypes as well as mechanical, thermal, and environmental test fixtures.
  • Perform qualification testing (vibration, impact, durability, and IP sealing) and analyze results to improve product reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, manufacturing, and R&D teams to support products through industrialization and contribute to the continuous improvement of current and future product generations.

YOUR PROFILE

What we're looking for:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design of manufactured products, ideally within power electronics, industrial automation, or electromechanical equipment.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D design, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Experience designing enclosures for power electronics products such as Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), converters, inverters, industrial power supplies, or similar products.
  • Solid knowledge of sheet metal design, plastic injection molding, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
  • Experience with product prototyping, assembly, and laboratory validation.
  • Good understanding of thermal management principles; experience with CFD software (Flow Simulation, Icepak, FloTHERM, Fluent, or equivalent) is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience with mechanical qualification testing (vibration, impact, fatigue, and IP sealing) is an asset.
  • Fluent English is required; professional French is considered an asset.
  • Autonomous, curious, and hands-on professional who enjoys both product design in SolidWorks and laboratory work within an agile product development environment.
What We Offer:
  • Annual salary between $100,000 and $120,000, based on experience.
  • Permanent, full-time position.
  • Hybrid work model with flexible working hours.
  • Four weeks of paid vacation.
  • Comprehensive group insurance, including health, disability, and life insurance.
  • A highly technical environment with direct access to development laboratories and prototype testing facilities.
  • Modern offices conveniently located in downtown Montreal, easily accessible by public transit.
