ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist / Mechanical Designer will prepare and maintain accurate mechanical drawings and documentation for terminal projects across North America. This position supports the engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and maintenance of new and existing terminal facilities.

The successful candidate will translate engineering concepts, field information, vendor data, and design markups into clear, coordinated drawings and models.

The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing, maintaining, and modifying 3D mechanical and piping models, reviewing mechanical and piping designs prepared by external engineering firms, and incorporating approved design changes into the 3D model and associated project drawings.

The Mechanical Engineering Technologist / Mechanical Designer will work closely with engineers, project managers, operations, maintenance, vendors, and external engineering firms. This position contributes to the safe and efficient delivery of terminal projects by ensuring that mechanical design information is complete, consistent, traceable, and suitable for construction and ongoing operations.

The role requires a practical understanding of mechanical and piping systems and the ability to move effectively between P&IDs, 3D models, engineering drawings, vendor documentation, field conditions, and construction requirements.

KEY ACTIVITIES:

Mechanical Drafting and Design Documentation

• Prepare and revise plan, elevation, section, detail, arrangement, fabrication, installation, and as-built drawings for terminal mechanical systems.
• Develop and maintain piping layouts, piping and instrumentation drawing markups, piping isometrics, equipment arrangements, and mechanical interface drawings.
• Create and update drawings for tanks, pumps, loading arms, vapour control systems, truck and rail loading systems, skids, pipe racks, platforms, access ways, and related terminal equipment.
• Develop, maintain, and modify 3D mechanical and piping models for new and existing terminal facilities.
• Translate P&IDs, engineering drawings, vendor information, field measurements, design markups, and approved technical changes into coordinated 3D models and drawings.
• Incorporate approved modifications into the 3D model and ensure all affected mechanical drawings, isometrics, layouts, and associated documentation are updated accordingly.
• Produce drawing views, dimensions, annotations, bills of materials, line numbers, equipment tags, notes, and revision information in accordance with project standards.
• Incorporate engineering calculations, design criteria, field measurements, redlines, vendor information, and approved technical changes into drawing packages.
• Support the preparation of mechanical equipment layouts and maintain clear interfaces between piping, structural, civil, electrical, instrumentation, and architectural disciplines.
• Review 3D models and mechanical layouts for equipment access, piping routing, constructability, maintenance access, and coordination with other disciplines.
• Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, constructability, consistency, and compliance with drafting standards before issue.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of standard drawing details, title blocks, templates, symbols, layers, and drafting procedures.

Project Coordination and Delivery

• Work with engineers and project teams to clarify design intent, resolve drafting issues, and incorporate comments from internal and external reviewers.
• Coordinate mechanical drawings with vendor packages, equipment data sheets, piping specifications, civil and structural drawings, and field installation requirements.
• Review mechanical and piping design packages prepared by external engineering firms and identify discrepancies, omissions, coordination issues, and constructability concerns.
• Provide technical comments on mechanical and piping design deliverables and coordinate revisions with external engineering firms, vendors, and contractors.
• Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, model reviews, and project coordination meetings as required.
• Support preparation of drawing registers, transmittals, document lists, quantity take-offs, and other project documentation.
• Assist with drawing updates during procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout, including the incorporation of approved field changes.
• Support projects through concept, detailed design, procurement, fabrication, construction, commissioning, and closeout by maintaining continuity between the 3D model, drawings, vendor information, and verified field conditions.

Field Support and As Built Documentation

• Review field conditions, measurements, photographs, and contractor markups to support accurate drawing development and updates.
• Provide drafting support during site visits, construction, equipment installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
• Prepare and maintain as-built drawings based on verified field information and approved redlines.
• Support the resolution of drawing discrepancies and respond to technical queries from contractors, vendors, operations, and maintenance personnel.
• Follow site safety requirements and company procedures when working at operating terminals or construction sites.
• Perform field verification of existing piping and mechanical equipment and incorporate verified field conditions into the 3D model and project documentation.
• Support troubleshooting and modification activities by developing practical mechanical and piping layouts, sketches, and drawing updates for Operations and Maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Design and Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 3–5 years of mechanical drafting, mechanical design, or piping design experience, preferably in oil and gas, petrochemical, bulk storage, terminal, industrial, or related sectors.
• Experience interpreting engineering markups, specifications, vendor drawings, field measurements, and technical documentation.
• Working knowledge of mechanical and piping systems, equipment layouts, dimensions, tolerances, materials, and construction practices.
• Demonstrated experience developing and modifying 3D mechanical and piping models.
• Strong ability to interpret P&IDs and translate them into practical mechanical and piping layouts and 3D models.
• Experience reviewing mechanical and piping drawings or models prepared by others and identifying design, coordination, and constructability issues.
• Ability to work from field information and travel to project or terminal sites as required.
• Experience with industrial piping, fuel transfer systems, tank farms, loading systems, pumps, skids, or similar process/mechanical infrastructure is highly desirable.
• Experience with AutoCAD and preferably a 3D plant/mechanical design platform such as Navisworks, AutoCAD Plant 3D, SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent.
• Experience producing and updating piping isometrics from 3D models is an asset.
• Knowledge of applicable Canadian and U.S. codes, standards, and petroleum terminal practices is an asset.
• Ability to review and coordinate 3D models, point clouds, PDFs, markups, photographs, and vendor drawings.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
• Ability to interpret technical information and convert it into practical, readable drawings.
• Ability to manage multiple drawing packages, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to safety, quality, code compliance, and continuous improvement.
• C.E.T., C.Tech., P.Tech., or equivalent professional certification is an asset.

Additional Information

This role requires up to 25% travel across Canada and the United States to support engineering reviews, construction, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational support at terminal sites
