Position Overview

The Senior Chemist supports the development, optimization, and technical control of PVC plastisol formulations used in casting, extrusion coating, and top coating operations. This role serves as a technical resource within the manufacturing environment, helping ensure formulation consistency, product performance, and compliance with applicable standards.

Working closely with Product Development, Process Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing, the Senior Chemist applies polymer chemistry knowledge and practical problem solving to support both product development and ongoing production needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, adjustment, and optimization of PVC plastisol formulations used in casting, extrusion coating, and top coating operations.
  • Evaluate raw materials, processing conditions, chemical blend consistency, and finished product performance to support formulation control and product reliability.
  • Plan, conduct, and assess laboratory and production trials to support product development, process changes, and manufacturing troubleshooting.
  • Perform laboratory testing and analyze results to evaluate physical and chemical properties, processing characteristics, product quality, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Troubleshoot formulation, material, product, and process issues in collaboration with Product Development, Process Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to production challenges, product non-conformances, customer concerns, and quality deviations.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate technical documentation, including formulation records, lab results, trial summaries, test reports, and recommendations.
  • Provide technical input on material specifications, manufacturability, product performance requirements, and process improvement opportunities.
  • Contribute technical expertise to continuous improvement initiatives related to formulation consistency, product quality, process reliability, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science and/or Materials Science.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in industrial chemistry, polymer science, plastics, petrochemicals, coatings, coated fabrics, PVC plastisol formulation, flexible vinyl, or a related manufacturing environment.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of polymer chemistry, formulation principles, and material performance.
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis, data interpretation, and technical problem solving.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, root cause analysis, or continuous improvement methods is considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate technical documentation, formulation records, laboratory results, and trial reports.
  • Ability to work effectively in both laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to analyze test results, troubleshoot formulation or process issues, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Product Development, Process Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Research and Development.

Pay: $100,000.00-$120,000.00 per year
