Full job description

Position Summary:

The Clinical Engineering Technologist is responsible for the safety inspection, performance assurance, preventive maintenance, calibration, and repairs of "high volume" equipment such as IV pumps, SPOT vital signs monitors, pulse oximeters, thermometers as well as a wide range of patient monitoring equipment and other diagnostic/therapeutic equipment. The Technologist also works with clinical staff, in the event of equipment malfunction, to troubleshoot and identify the cause of problems and determine a fix or best solution so that equipment downtime can be minimized.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carries out preventive maintenance routines, safety inspections and performance assurance using a variety of test equipment and tools such as patient simulators, pressure meters, multi-meters, oscilloscopes and safety analyzers etc…
  • Performs in-house repairs of a wide range of medical equipment utilizing resources such as training materials, service manuals, telephone/on-line technical support
  • Performs incoming inspection of new equipment which includes receiving, documenting, assembling, installing, conducting safety and performance testing as well as other specific activities dictated by the equipment to prepare it for clinical use
  • Determines and orders service parts/kits for equipment maintenance and repairs and assists clinical areas in ordering accessories and supplies
  • Maintains work documentation, equipment and parts inventory information
  • Coordinates with equipment vendors/manufacturers or third party service providers for warranty repairs and preventive maintenance under service agreements/contracts
  • Works collaboratively with clinical users to provide technical support in response to their clinical needs
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with job classification, as assigned or requested

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited college program in Biomedical Engineering Technology and/or equivalent
  • Five or more years of clinical engineering experience in a hospital environment required
  • Registration with Ontario Association of Certified Technologists and Technicians is an asset
  • Experience repairing IV pumps, vital signs monitors, ECG machines, Electro-surgical Units and networked bed-side monitors required
  • Experience repairing ventilators, anesthesia gas machines is an asset
  • Experience working with medical device application software such as Alaris System Maintenance and Total Maintenance System (TMS) is preferred
  • Basic computer and networking skills as well as strong mechanical aptitude
  • Familiarity with pneumatic, hydraulic or optical system is an asset
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Ability to interact in a clear and effective manner internally with clinical staff and externally with equipment vendors or service providers
  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven atmosphere and handle multiple projects/tasks with attention to detail
  • Satisfactory attendance record
