Full job description

Senior Lumber Trader

About Vantage

Vantage Commodities is a trader-led lumber firm based in Vancouver. We're a small, focused team that values sharp execution and clear thinking. No corporate bloat—just people who know the business and move quickly.

The Role

We're expanding our trading desk and looking for a proven lumber trader to drive growth across SYP, DF, and SPF in wholesale and distribution channels. You'll have full P&L ownership and the autonomy to build your book—with opportunity to lead a department or launch a new vertical as the business scales.

What You'll Do

  • Own your P&L: Source, price, hedge, and execute trades across SYP/DF/SPF products
  • Drive revenue expansion with mills, reloads, distribution networks, truss/wall panel manufacturers, and select end users
  • Manage risk exposure using futures and related instruments; align hedges with physical positions and delivery timing
  • Execute with precision using Vantage's proprietary software for fast quoting, pricing discipline, and real-time risk tracking
  • Build sustainable pipeline through consistent prospecting, relationship management, and data-driven targeting
  • Collaborate with logistics to secure reliable lanes, reduce friction, and optimize freight efficiency
  • Develop talent: Mentor junior traders and help establish desk playbooks, pricing frameworks, and trading processes
  • Lead at scale: Build and manage a desk/department as we grow—set targets, coach your team, and drive accountability

What You Bring

Required:

  • 5–10+ years of lumber trading experience (wholesale/distribution) with documented P&L success
  • Deep product knowledge across SYP, DF, SPF—lengths, grades, tallies, reload dynamics, and market nuances
  • Proven futures experience (hedging, basis trading, spreads) with real accountability for risk management
  • Cross-border trading experience in U.S. and/or Canadian markets
  • Established mill and customer relationships with confident supply negotiation skills
  • Strong execution discipline: fast quoting, consistent follow-through, and margin protection

Nice to Have:

  • Mill sales background readily transferable to trading operations
  • Experience launching a new product line, geographic region, or vertical
  • Comfort with CRM systems, pricing tools, and modern trading software

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive draw + industry-leading commission structure designed for top producers
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Leadership incentives for desk ownership and team building
  • Potential to transition to independent contractor status

Work Environment

  • Hours: 6:30 AM start, Monday–Friday
  • Culture: Fast-paced, results-oriented trading floor with low bureaucracy and high trust
  • Location: On-site in downtown Vancouver with potential for remote flexibility upon management approval

Why Vantage?

  • Capital strength: Well-capitalized platform with leadership that backs intelligent risk-taking
  • Technology edge: Modern tools that eliminate friction and accelerate execution
  • Growth opportunity: Real upside for traders who build books and lead teams
  • Trader-first culture: Performance-driven environment where results speak louder than politics

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $150,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Dental care
  • Extended health care
  • On-site gym
  • RRSP match

Work Location: In person
