Practice Details:
Northern Health is seeking Family Physicians and General Internists interested in providing inpatient care at Ksyen Regional Hospital in Terrace, British Columbia. This is an excellent opportunity for physicians who enjoy hospital medicine within a well-supported regional referral centre, while experiencing the exceptional lifestyle and outdoor recreation available in Northwest BC.

Position Overview

Physicians work on a week-long rotation, providing care to the unattached inpatient service. The service is designed to support manageable patient volumes, strong collegial collaboration, and access to specialist consultation when required.

Hours of Work & Call Responsibilities
Week-long assignments, beginning with handover at 0700 every Friday
Responsible for managing assigned inpatients from 0700 to 2200 daily
Overnight call coverage for all inpatients from 2200 to 0700, approximately two nights per week
Admissions are completed by the Emergency Department physician prior to transfer to the inpatient service

Compensation

Physicians may choose to bill under either the Longitudinal Family Physician (LFP) payment model or traditional Fee-for-Service (FFS), depending on individual preference. Billings are eligible for the 18.48% Rural Retention Premium. In addition, a daily stipend of $600 is available, and for Family Physicians who are members of the Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice will receive an approximately $500 stipend per overnight call shift.

Travel and accommodation expenses are reimbursed in accordance with the Rural General Practitioner Locum Program guidelines.

Physicians considering a permanent move to Terrace may also be eligible for recruitment incentives, relocation assistance, and annual retention payments.

Practice Environment

One physician covers the unattached inpatient service each week. Three local community physicians manage their own attached patients and assist with overflow coverage when required.

Additional features of the service include:
  • Soft patient cap of approximately 15 inpatients, adjusted based on physician comfort and patient complexity
  • Structured rotational process for managing overflow admissions
  • Patients who become Alternate Level of Care (ALC) or have extended lengths of stay may be transferred to local clinic physicians through a shared coverage rota
  • Strong specialist support and collaborative care environment

RSA Incentives
Accommodation guidelines:
  • Accommodations will be reimbursed in accordance with the approved list of accommodations offering government rates. The list of approved accommodations is available at: http://csa.pss.gov.bc.ca/businesstravel/

  • Where a government approved accommodation is available and a physician chooses to stay in a licensed non-government approved accommodation, a rate up to the maximum of an approved accommodation in the community will be paid.

  • If there is no approved accommodations in the community, payment will be made up to
$120 per night upon submission of a receipt.

  • Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis in advance of the locum assignment.

  • Private accommodations in A & B communities will be reimbursed as follows:
Staying at a friend/relative’s house, a nightly rate of $30 per night will be paid (no receipt required)
o Staying at a home owned by the locum physician (not their principal residence), a rate of $30 per night will be paid (no receipt required)
o Staying at accommodation owned by the local physicians, clinic, health care society, etc., a rate of 50% of the approved hotel accommodation in the community will be paid. If there is no approved accommodation in the community then ½ of the $120 per night will be paid (see above). A receipt signed by the owner of the accommodation must be submitted.
o Staying at a non-licensed accommodation such as an Air B & B, Bed and Breakfast, etc., payment will be made up to ½ of the maximum allowable per night in the community. If there is no approved accommodation in the community then 50% of the $120 per night (see above) will be paid. A receipt signed by the owner of the accommodation must be submitted.

Car Rentals:
Car rental expenses will be reimbursed where it is necessary for a locum physician to rent a vehicle. Normally an economy car will be covered except in the case of bad road conditions where it may be necessary to rent a 4 wheel drive or car with good winter tires.

Travel Time:
Locums will be paid for the travel expenses incurred to travel to and from the community either from/to their registered home location or any BC location that is closer or more economical.


Ksyen Regional Hospital:
Ksyen Regional Hospital welcomed its first patients in November 2024. More than double the size of the previous hospital, it is a center for trauma services, acute care, surgical services pathology, radiology, clinical support and pharmacy services for the Northwest region. The hospital staff prides itself on delivering culturally safe care to our Indigenous populations.

  • 4 surgical suites, including a dedicated Orthopedics OR
  • 6 ICU Beds, with potential to expand to 8
  • 20 Bed Emergency Department with 2 Trauma Bays

The new hospital will also include a Tier 3 neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery, which will provide community-based antenatal and postnatal services, education and parenting support to pregnant individuals.
