Full job description

Experience Aviva

Together, we are Aviva. Our values — Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence — guide how we show up for each other and for our customers. Individually, they’re words. Together, they define who we are.

At Aviva Canada, we put people first, our employees, our customers, and our communities. We’re proud of a culture built on care, inclusion, and collaboration, where your voice matters and your growth is supported. We’re not just about insurance; we’re about making a real difference by protecting what matters most.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Corporate Counsel to join Aviva Canada’s General Counsel Office, providing support to business partners throughout the organization.

In this capacity, you will work with skilled legal leaders and colleagues to offer practical, high-quality legal counsel across diverse corporate, commercial, and regulatory issues. This is an excellent chance for a junior to intermediate lawyer seeking to advance an in-house legal career in a nurturing, team-oriented setting.

You will gain exposure to Aviva Canada’s business priorities, build positive relationships with collaborators, and continue developing your legal judgment and commercial experience.

What you’ll do:

  • Collaborate with business teams to deliver clear, practical, and timely legal advice.

  • Assist senior lawyers with a broad array of corporate, commercial, and regulatory issues.

  • Manage assigned legal files and matters, building confidence and independence over time.

  • Identify potential legal risks and collaborate with senior counsel to address them proactively.

  • Keep up to date with legal and regulatory changes impacting Aviva Canada’s operations.

  • Build strong working relationships across Legal and the broader organization.

  • Work with external counsel and professional advisors as needed.

  • Bring Aviva’s values to life through your advice, interactions, and decision-making.

What you’ll bring:

  • Call to a Canadian provincial bar with a current practising licence.

  • 2+ years of legal experience gained in private practice and/or an in-house environment

  • Understanding of the Canadian legal and regulatory system.

  • Strong legal research, drafting, and negotiation skills.

  • Clear, effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands and meet deadlines.

  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build trust with diverse partners.

What makes you stand out:

  • Experience in insurance and/or working with large financial institutions

  • Comfort working with a range of business collaborators.

  • Curiosity, learning agility, and a proactive approach.

What you’ll get:

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $120,000 to $150,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.

  • Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.

  • Hybrid flexible work model.

  • Outstanding career development opportunities.

  • We’ll support your professional development education.

  • Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.

  • Employee-driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Corporate wellness programs to support our employees’ physical and mental health.
