The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing accounting operations and financial reporting, providing leadership to the accounting team across core accounting functions to ensure accurate, timely, and reliable financial information for decision-making. This role maintains strong financial controls, supports reporting and audit requirements, and helps drive efficiency and integrity across the finance function. The ideal candidate is a strong technical accountant with sound judgement, proven leadership experience, and the ability to mentor and support a team. They are organized, analytical, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and control. They communicate professionally, take a practical, solutions-focused approach, and can manage financial processes end to end. Reporting to the Controller, the main responsibilities include:

  • Lead and coordinate the full accounting cycle and month-end close process
  • Oversee project and operational accounting functions, including billing, accounts receivable, job costing and support for forecasting and variance analysis
  • Provide leadership and supervision to accounting team members
  • Partner with the management team to ensure accurate data, forecasting and project variances
  • Coordinate year-end audit preparation, liaise with auditors and internal stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and broader financial planning and analysis activities

Qualifications

The main qualifications for this role include:

  • Formal education in accounting or finance
  • CPA designation is preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory experience
  • Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, month-end close processes, and financial statement preparation
  • Experience working with ERP systems and in multi-entity or multi-company environments is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of professionalism and discretion
  • Public accounting experience is considered a strong asset
  • Construction or project-based industry experience is considered an asset
