Customs Specialist – Jnr (Duty Drawback Focus)

Summary of position:

The Junior Customs Specialist is responsible for managing Canadian customs documentation and compliance processes for imported and exported shipments, with a specific focus on identifying, preparing, and filing Duty Drawback claims. This role ensures all cross-border shipments meet CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) requirements and that the company maximizes duty recovery opportunities through accurate and timely drawback submissions.

This role is primarily focused on customs documentation, duty drawback administration, tariff classification support, customs recordkeeping, and working with customs brokers to ensure accurate and compliant import and export transactions. The successful candidate will assist in identifying opportunities to recover duties through the Canadian Duty Drawback Program while maintaining accurate customs records and supporting regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

Customs Compliance

  • Assist with the administration of the Canadian Duty Drawback Program.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation required to support Duty Drawback claims.
  • Organize and maintain customs records in accordance with CBSA record retention requirements.
  • Review customs documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
  • Work directly with customs brokers to facilitate the clearance of imported shipments.
  • Assist with resolving customs-related issues and requests from CBSA or customs brokers.
  • Verify tariff classifications (HS Codes), country of origin, customs valuation, and duty information.
  • Assist with monitoring changes to CBSA regulations, customs legislation, and trade agreements.
  • Support internal customs compliance initiatives and recommend process improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records to support internal audits and CBSA compliance reviews.
  • Research customs regulations and assist with special customs projects as required.

Documentation & Administration

  • Prepare and organize import and export documentation.
  • Maintain customs files and supporting documentation.
  • Review commercial invoices and supplier documentation for customs compliance.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and customs brokers to obtain missing customs information.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to duties, taxes, import permits, certificates of origin, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist Finance with customs-related reconciliations and duty recovery documentation.
  • Perform other customs compliance and administrative duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret customs documentation and regulations.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience in customs, import/export compliance, customs brokerage, or international trade.
  • Experience working with Canadian customs regulations is preferred.
  • Experience with the Canadian Duty Drawback Program is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of CBSA import requirements and customs documentation.
  • Familiarity with HS Tariff Classification, customs valuation, and country-of-origin rules is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience working with customs brokers is preferred.

  • Ability to work from the company office.
