Job description - Law Clerk - Family Law, Civil Litigation, Criminal Law

We are looking for an experienced Law Clerk to support our growing firm. The successful candidate will work closely with lawyers, staff, clients, and court officials. This position is well-suited for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys navigating legal matters, and can manage multiple tasks of varying importance.

Responsibilities for this Role:

  • Answering phones professionally, respectfully, and referring clients to proper resources or next steps
  • Drafting and submitting legal documents, both in-person and virtually, within the court-appointed time frames
  • Keeping track of submission deadlines while keeping consistent communication with clients and managing lawyer
  • Responding to various forms of correspondence (e.x. fax, email) on a daily basis
  • Organizing client's physical and electronic file
  • Other responsibilities that may arise as deemed necessary by the managing lawyer
  • Docketing billable and non-billable hours in our accounting system

Qualifications and Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a law clerk, legal assistant, or similar legal support role
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience (family law experience is an asset)
  • Familiarity with the Family Law Act, Divorce Act, Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Organized and able to adhere to strict deadlines
  • Honest about skill level and completion of tasks
  • Professional at all times
  • Ability to prioritize tasks
  • Cooperative with others in a professional setting
  • Ability to change focus when tasks of higher priority arise
  • High degree of emotional intelligence
  • Strong communication skills with clients and office staff
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.x. Word, Excel, OneNote)
  • Familiarity with DivorceMate forms and requirements
  • Experience with LEAP is an asset
