Job Summary

The Laser Machine Operator sets up, operates and maintains our CNC fiber laser cutting system to produce precision sheet-metal parts from engineering drawings and nested cut files, working closely with the Designer, Production Manager and downstream press brake and welding teams to keep the shop's core cutting operation running safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

● Set up and operate the CNC fiber laser cutting machine, selecting correct cutting parameters (power, speed, focus, assist gas) for the material type and thickness.

● Load sheet stock, run nested cutting programs, and monitor the cut in progress to catch and correct quality issues in real time.

● Read and interpret engineering drawings, cut files and material specifications to confirm the right program and material are being used.

● Perform first-piece and in-process quality checks using calipers, gauges and other measuring tools; flag and quarantine non-conforming parts.

● Carry out routine preventive maintenance, lens/nozzle cleaning and basic troubleshooting on the laser and the nitrogen assist-gas generation system; escalate major faults promptly.

● Sort, label and stage cut parts for the press brake and welding stations, and keep production and scrap records up to date.

● Follow all safety procedures for laser operation, material handling and fume/dust extraction, including required PPE and lockout/tagout practices.

● Maintain a clean, organized work area and support 5S/housekeeping standards on the shop floor.

Required Qualifications

● 1–3+ years' experience operating a CNC laser cutting machine (fiber laser preferred) in a sheet-metal or metal fabrication environment.

● Ability to read and interpret engineering/shop drawings, cut lists and basic GD&T.

● Working knowledge of sheet-metal materials (mild steel, stainless, aluminum) and how gauge/thickness affects cutting parameters.

● Comfortable with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges) and basic quality documentation.

● Physically able to lift and maneuver sheet stock, stand for extended periods, and work safely around industrial machinery.

● Valid WHMIS certification (or willingness to obtain before start).

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience with nesting/CAM software (e.g. SigmaNEST-class) and basic familiarity with AutoCAD or SolidWorks files.

● Experience with in-house nitrogen or oxygen assist-gas generation systems.

● College diploma or trade certificate in machining, manufacturing technology, or a related field.

Work Environment

Manufacturing shop floor; exposure to noise, heat, and machinery. Standard PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots) required. Occasional overtime during peak production periods.

Pay: $22.00-$24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week

Work Location: In person
