What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Vision Systems Engineer to contribute to the design and development of robust and stable automation equipment and assembly lines. You will join a world-class team of engineers responsible for designing, building, and deploying Tesla in-house discrete and process automation equipment solutions for Optimus, cell manufacturing, energy, and vehicle general assembly.

As a Vision Systems Engineer, you are responsible for integrating vision systems solutions for cell manufacturing projects. This includes providing support activities such as design, implementation, installation, changes, debugging and testing vision systems and configuration. Vision Systems Engineers own equipment standard, hardware configuration, commissioning, and review process of the vision systems project as well as additional functions such as auditing, installation, and safety assessment.


The Vision Engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams such as Electrical and Mechanical Design Engineering, Project Management, Controls Engineers, Quality, Production, and Maintenance throughout the entire life cycle of the equipment from initial design, through development and into full production.

What You'll Do

  • Develop machine vision solutions for 2D/3D metrology, barcode reader, vision-guided robotic and process monitoring systems into high-speed manufacturing lines
  • Manage vision systems and deploy systems to conform to Tesla infrastructure
  • Support vision systems throughout the life cycle on equipment
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits for all future systems
  • Introduce automated vision processes into production, train maintenance & production teams to support after deployment into production
  • Spearhead your own continuous improvement efforts in the endeavor to create reliable & efficient code
  • Debugging and troubleshooting visions system deployments to maximize throughput and uptime
  • Calibration and commissioning of vision cameras for 2D/3D part inspection, robot automation, and process control
  • Developing Tesla controls specifications and standards; facilitating vendor conformance to standards; and evaluating vendor proposals
  • Establishing vision systems test plans

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent Majors in: Controls or Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of experience with vision systems and automation
  • Common vision platforms: Cognex, Keyence, Sick, Fanuc iR-vision, Mechmind, etc.
  • Software development experience in computer vision libraries like Mvtec Halcon
  • Experience in 3D reconstruction, hand eye and multicamera calibration processes
  • Vision systems components like imaging sensors, frame grabbers, lightning, lenses, etc.
  • Programming vision systems applications using common programming languages such as Mvtec hdevelop, C++, C#, Python
  • Understanding of machine vision protocols like GigE and GenICam as well as control system protocols like Ethercat and Profinet
  • Exposure to programming Industrial PC, PLC, robots and motion controllers
  • Must be able to travel both domestically and internationally, must have and maintain a valid passport, travel can be 25% of time, during busy project season can travel up to 50%
