About the Role
Leo's Donair is seeking a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented Quality Assurance Technician to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safety, quality, and regulatory compliance of all products manufactured at our facility while supporting our food safety and quality management systems.
Applicants must currently reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure food safety and quality of all products produced.
- Conduct quality inspections of products and production processes at various stages to ensure compliance with company specifications and regulatory requirements.
- Perform inspections of employee practices and verify compliance with CFIA, Health Canada, HACCP, GMP, and company food safety requirements.
- Collect product and environmental samples for testing, including allergen, gluten, and sanitation verification.
- Collect, analyze, and trend quality data and prepare quality reports.
- Implement and maintain Quality Assurance programs and verify compliance with all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure all quality, production, sanitation, and HACCP documentation is completed accurately and on time.
- Perform internal audits and participate in external audits and certifications, including NSF audits.
- Conduct mock recall exercises.
- Participate in food safety, food fraud, food defense, and crisis management exercises.
- Investigate non-conformance issues, participate in root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
- Collaborate with production teams to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Ensure all employee food safety and quality training records are current and properly documented.
- Update SOPs, forms, and quality documentation as required, implement revisions, and train employees on new procedures.
- Verify the effectiveness of the plant HACCP plan.
- Attend HACCP team meetings and ensure all action items are documented and completed.
- Perform QA activities such as equipment calibration, verification, and monitoring.
- Support the continuous improvement of the company's Quality Management System (QMS).
- Act as the liaison between Leo's Donair and external quality-related contractors.
- Maintain current knowledge of food safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Food Science, Meat Science, Food/Biological Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Food industry experience.
- Experience participating in food safety audits and certifications.
- Experience reviewing food labels and regulatory compliance.
- Quality Assurance experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Preferred
- Experience in Quality Assurance within the food processing industry.
- Experience with meat processing or ready-to-eat food manufacturing.
- HACCP Certification.
- Experience with NSF audits and certifications.
- Gluten testing experience.
- Experience with Nutrition Facts Table (NFT) regulations and label submission processes.
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
- Knowledge of SQF, BRCGS, or other GFSI-recognized food safety standards is considered an asset.
