JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Geotechnical and Material Testing Technician, is responsible for completing Material Testing and other QA/QC tasks in the field and from our in-house lab in Fort McMurray, AB. This role requires experience in soil and concrete testing, compaction and Construction QA/QC at client sites. You will be responsible for producing testing results and completing forms and reports, and other project deliverables.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform checks on geotechnical instrumentation data and complete monitoring forms

  • Prepare client monitoring reports, other deliverables

  • Carry out thorough soil quality assessments including assessing soil quality and classification, and comparisons to project specs

  • Perform tests within our soils and concrete laboratory

  • Perform field tests on soils, concrete, and aggregates to determine their density and compaction characteristics

  • Collect and record data from tests and maintain accurate records of test results

  • Communicate test results to project managers and construction personnel, and work with them to ensure that materials are properly compacted

  • Conduct tests in accordance with industry standards and regulations and maintain a thorough understanding of current testing methods and procedures

  • Safely perform laboratory testing; clean, maintain and calibrate testing equipment

  • Safely operate on Haul Roads, prioritizing the well-being of everyone involved on the project site

  • Identify and report any issues or concerns related to the quality of materials or the testing process

  • Participate in safety training and follow all safety protocols and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate has a strong background in Material field and lab Testing, Berm Monitoring experience will be an asset. We are seeking individuals who can use their knowledge and skills to perform quality control and quality assurance testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, etc., performing work in the field and in our in-house lab. Experience in all of these areas is preferred, but additional training will be provided. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality Materials Testing services and solutions to our clients.

  • Post-secondary education in Construction Engineering and/or Civil Engineering Technology an asset

  • Previous experience in identifying soil types and soil quality and possess an understanding of geological formations including Berm Monitoring

  • Experience with QA/QC for rut-and-roll tests, test pits and compaction testing

  • Experience preparing forms and paperwork including turn-over packages for clients

  • Previous experience in oil sands projects an asset

  • CCIL Certification for soils, concrete and asphalt would be an asset

  • Excellent client relations and communication skills and a motivated team player

  • Excellent written communication skills to prepare accurate records and notes and report on test results

  • A strong commitment to safety and sustainability

  • Passion for excellence and attention to detail

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products specifically Word and Excel

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Support and participate in Safety Committee activities

  • Conduct project/field safety audits when required
