Andrologist-In-Training
Hours: 7:30am - 3:30pm, 5 days a week (includes weekend)
OVERVIEW:
This is a learning position to develop professional skills and gain experience in the clinical andrology laboratory with the goal of achieving proficiency in the performance of andrology procedures in accordance with Olive Fertility Centre’s protocol manuals.
SCOPE AND FUNCTION:
1. This is a full-time position reporting to the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director.
2. The andrologist-in-training works under direct supervision at all times performing assigned duties and responsibilities until they obtain proficiency and is signed off by the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director in accordance with Olive Fertility Centre’s procedures and protocols and training manuals.
3. After obtaining proficiency in andrology procedures, and upon approval by the laboratory director, the andrologist-in-training continues to perform independently .
4. The andrologist performs diagnostic and therapeutic andrology procedures including semen profile, sperm washes for intrauterine insemination (IUI)/in vitro fertilization (IVF), trial wash, semen cryopreservation/thaw, and preparation of donor specimens for donor insemination.
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY AND STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:
Andrologists-in-training performs andrology procedures to the highest standards during training and after being cleared and signed off to perform andrology procedures under supervision.
Patient Contact – Interpret andrology results for patients and referring physicians. Discuss various tests and procedures with patients. Schedule and instruct patients for andrology procedures.
Semen Profile – Semen profile is performed in accordance with established Olive Fertility Centre procedures and protocols. Guidelines for semen parameters are in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO). All results are recorded in eIVF.
Sperm Preparation for IUI and IVF – Sperm preparation for IUI/IVF is performed according to established Olive Fertility Centre procedures and protocols. Different methods of preparation are employed depending on which procedure is being performed.
Donor Sperm Preparation for IUI and IVF – Donor sperm preparation is performed according to the respective donor bank thaw protocols and Olive Fertility Center established procedures. Different methods for thaw/preparation are employed depending on which procedure is being performed.
Semen Freezing – Semen is processed and frozen according to Olive Fertility Centre procedures and protocols. Sample cryo vials and canes are labeled with patient name, date of birth/freeze and accession number, which are then logged in eIVF to ensure proper identification when thawed.
Thaw of Cryopreserved Sperm/Semen – Cryopreserved semen samples are thawed according to Olive Fertility Center established procedures in the case of specimens frozen at Olive Fertility Centre.
PREREQUISITES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Bachelor’s degree in biology or the biological sciences from an accredited university.
2. Copies of degrees, transcripts, and references for personnel files.
3. Adequate computer skills. Intermediate to advanced knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, outlook and PowerPoint. Understanding of the Internet is necessary.
4. Previous human or animal andrology experience is not required. This is an entry level position for an outstanding candidate with great potential and a desire to become an andrologist at Olive Fertility Centre.
