Position Details

• Positions: Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA)
• Location: Nunavut, Canada
• Employment Type: Full-Time / Temporary Travel Contract Opportunities

Positions Available1. Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)

Pay Rate: $75.00–$85.00 per hour

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will perform clinical laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures to support patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.

You will work collaboratively with healthcare teams while maintaining high standards of laboratory quality, accuracy, and patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

• Performing diagnostic laboratory testing and analysis
• Processing and analyzing biological specimens
• Performing testing in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, transfusion medicine, or other applicable laboratory disciplines
• Operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory instruments
• Completing quality control and quality assurance procedures
• Identifying and troubleshooting testing or equipment issues
• Ensuring accurate documentation and reporting of test results
• Communicating critical laboratory findings according to established protocols
• Following laboratory safety, biosafety, and infection prevention standards
• Maintaining appropriate specimen handling, storage, and tracking procedures
• Supporting efficient laboratory operations and workflow
• Collaborating with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams

Qualifications – Medical Laboratory Technologist

Successful candidates should have:

• Recognized Medical Laboratory Technology diploma or degree
• Relevant professional certification, such as CSMLS, where required
• Eligibility to practise in Nunavut
• Minimum two years of recent professional Medical Laboratory Technologist experience
• Experience performing diagnostic laboratory testing in a clinical setting
• Strong understanding of laboratory quality control and safety procedures
• Ability to operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
• Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Willingness to travel to northern healthcare facilities

Preferred Qualifications:

• Generalist Medical Laboratory Technologist experience
• Experience across multiple laboratory disciplines
• Previous hospital or acute care laboratory experience
• Experience with laboratory information systems
• Previous rural, remote, or northern healthcare experience

2. Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA)

Pay Rate: $55.00–$65.00 per hour

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will support laboratory operations through specimen collection, processing, preparation, and related technical and administrative activities.

You will help ensure specimens are collected, labelled, handled, and prepared accurately to support timely diagnostic testing.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:

• Collecting blood and other clinical specimens according to established procedures
• Performing phlebotomy where trained and authorized
• Preparing, labelling, and processing laboratory specimens
• Confirming patient identification and specimen accuracy
• Receiving and organizing specimens for laboratory testing
• Supporting specimen transportation and storage procedures
• Operating basic laboratory equipment within the MLA scope of practice
• Maintaining accurate laboratory documentation
• Supporting quality assurance and infection prevention standards
• Preparing laboratory supplies and monitoring inventory
• Maintaining clean, safe, and organized work areas
• Providing professional and respectful patient service
• Collaborating with Medical Laboratory Technologists and other healthcare professionals

Qualifications – Medical Laboratory Assistant

• Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate or equivalent accepted qualification
• Minimum two years of relevant professional Medical Laboratory Assistant experience
• Experience in specimen collection, phlebotomy, and specimen processing
• Strong knowledge of laboratory safety and infection prevention
• Understanding of patient identification and specimen handling procedures
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Good communication and organizational skills
• Willingness to travel to northern healthcare facilities

Preferred Qualifications:

• CSMLS Medical Laboratory Assistant certification or other recognized certification
• Previous experience in hospital or clinical laboratory environments
• Experience using laboratory information systems
• Experience performing phlebotomy with diverse patient populations
• Previous northern, rural, or remote healthcare experience
