Overview

  • This position will be posted until filled.

Lakehead University invites applications from qualified individuals to join the Department of Computer Science as Technical Staff (Computer Laboratory Technician – Level B) at the Barrie STEM Hub. The successful candidate will provide instructional support to undergraduate Computer Science laboratories, as well as technical support for departmental computing infrastructure, including teaching labs and High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, and research support to faculty and graduate students. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Computer Science, the Technician will support the delivery of laboratory components for HBSc programs, assist with the configuration and maintenance of lab and HPC environments, and contribute to a student-centered learning and research environment. The role also includes collaboration with faculty, technical staff, and institutional IT services to ensure effective operation of instructional and research computing resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on support during Computer Science laboratory sessions
  • Assist students with programming, tools, and development environments
  • Deliver lab demonstrations and tutorials in coordination with course instructors
  • Prepare and maintain lab materials (tutorials, exercises, example code)
  • Support grading of lab assignments via D2L following instructor guidelines
  • Coordinate closely with instructors to ensure smooth lab delivery
  • Support faculty and graduate students with research computing needs, including:
    • Software installation and environment configuration
    • Troubleshooting computational workflows
    • Managing datasets and research systems
  • Assist with HPC job configuration, execution, and optimization
  • Provide general technical support aligned with departmental research priorities
  • Install, configure, and maintain laboratory systems and the Barrie STEM Hub HPC cluster
  • Maintain operating systems, software packages, and security updates
  • Monitor system performance, storage, and network connectivity
  • Support scheduling systems (e.g., SLURM or equivalent)
  • Coordinate with Lakehead Technology Services Centre (TSC) on infrastructure and networking
  • Maintain lab equipment and specialized environments (AI/ML, robotics, distributed systems)
  • Provide training sessions and one-on-one support for students, faculty, and TAs
  • Develop documentation, tutorials, and technical guidelines
  • Support onboarding for lab and HPC usage
  • Participate in evaluation of software/tools and procurement processes
  • Liaise with hardware and software vendors as required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chair

Qualifications

  • HBSc in Computer Science or closely related field, MSc degree is preferred.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., C/C++, Java, Python, SQL, Assembly)
  • Experience with Linux systems administration and networking
  • Experience supporting or teaching Computer Science laboratories
  • Ability to troubleshoot software, systems, and programming issues
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with HPC environments and workload schedulers (e.g., SLURM)
  • Experience supporting AI/ML, robotics, or distributed systems environments
  • Experience with D2L or similar learning management systems
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices and lab management
  • Experience with software evaluation and procurement processes
  • Ontario Driver’s License
