Full job description

WHO WE ARE

Honu Poké is part of Kangsan Canada — a growing Winnipeg restaurant group built on operational excellence, genuine hospitality, and a team that takes real pride in the work.

Our Downtown location serves fresh poké bowls and Mr. Kim's Korean Fried Chicken at 190 Smith St., Unit 1. We hold a 4.7 Google rating — and that number is a direct reflection of the people behind every bowl and every plate.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

You know your way around a kitchen. You understand that prep is the foundation of everything, and you hold your station to a standard whether someone is watching or not.

Sushi experience is an asset — but what matters more is that you're precise, consistent, and someone who takes ownership of their work. If you've got the technical background and the right attitude, we'll build the rest together.

WHAT THE ROLE LOOKS LIKE

You'll be preparing, portioning, and organizing ingredients for poké, sushi, sauces, and menu items across our commissary and Downtown kitchen. You'll maintain freshness, consistency, and food safety standards on every shift, label, date, rotate, and store product according to our SOPs, assemble sushi items to house standards with attention to presentation and speed, and communicate prep or supply issues before they become problems.

This role moves between commissary prep and live service. You need to be someone who transitions between the two without losing pace or precision.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • 2+ years of kitchen prep or commissary experience — required
  • Sushi experience strongly preferred — professional experience is an asset
  • Solid understanding of food safety, organization, and FIFO
  • Precise, consistent, and detail-oriented in everything you touch
  • Reliable, punctual, and genuinely team-oriented
  • Comfortable working across multiple locations
  • Legally authorized to work in Manitoba
  • Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Reliable transportation to both locations

Weekend availability is mandatory. Part-time or full-time, 25–30 hours per week.

WHAT YOU GET

  • Hourly rate based on your experience and what you bring to the table
  • Tips on top
  • 30% staff discount plus meal incentives
  • Exposure to both commissary operations and sushi service
  • Clear systems, training, and leadership support
  • Real path to senior kitchen, commissary lead, or supervisory roles — we promote from within

HOW TO APPLY

Tell us two things: what your sushi or prep background actually looks like, and what your availability is Monday through Saturday.

No answer to both = no response. Simple as that.

Shortlisted candidates will initially be contacted for a video call interview. Trial shifts are part of our final selection process.
