Summary

Roots Kitchen & Bar is Harbour Landing Village’s full-service restaurant and community gathering place, offering a locally inspired menu that celebrates comfort, creativity, and connection. Our team takes pride in crafting high-quality, made-from-scratch dishes and providing a welcoming dining experience for residents, guests, and the broader community.

The Line Cook plays a vital role in preparing menu items to specification, maintaining kitchen organization, and supporting smooth, efficient service. Working closely with the culinary team, the Line Cook upholds high standards for food quality, consistency, and safety while contributing to a positive, collaborative kitchen culture that reflects the values of Harbour Landing Village.

Key Responsibilities

  • Menu Preparation & Execution: Prepare menu items according to recipes, portion guidelines, and presentation standards, ensuring quality and consistency for each service.
  • Station Readiness: Set up, stock, and maintain assigned workstations, ensuring all ingredients, tools, and equipment are available and organized before service.
  • Service Coordination: Communicate effectively with chefs and front-of-house staff to ensure meals are delivered accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Multi-Program Support: Assist in preparing food for Roots Kitchen & Bar, as well as other food programs across the Village, including catering, childcare, and senior living.
  • Food Safety & Sanitation: Follow all food handling, hygiene, and sanitation regulations to ensure a safe and compliant kitchen environment at all times.
  • Cleanliness & Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized workspace; assist with dishwashing, cleaning, and closing duties to support kitchen readiness.
  • Inventory & Waste Control: Monitor ingredient levels, label and rotate stock (FIFO), and minimize waste through efficient prep and storage practices.
  • Team Collaboration: Support and assist fellow kitchen team members to ensure smooth operations during peak periods and special events.
  • Creativity & Features: Contribute ideas for daily or seasonal specials, demonstrating initiative and a passion for culinary creativity.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as required to support the overall success of Roots Kitchen & Bar and the Food & Beverage Department.

Skills, Qualification, & Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a professional kitchen; breakfast and catering experience an asset
  • Culinary education, apprenticeship, or equivalent hands-on experience preferred
  • Strong understanding of food preparation techniques, portion control, and plating standards
  • Comprehensive knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and hygiene regulations
  • Valid Food Safety and WHMIS certifications required
  • Excellent understanding of kitchen operations, equipment use, and maintenance procedures
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and time management skills
  • Creative and adaptable with a passion for quality, presentation, and continuous improvement
  • Dependable, professional, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and remain standing for extended periods
