Full job description

Established in 1973, Birnam Excavating Ltd. is a privately owned, family run company engaged in the sewer, watermain, roadbuilding and general contracting industry. Our work involves upgrading key infrastructure under the ground in addition to providing quality surface works, as well as mechanical systems, process works, water and wastewater and general infrastructure projects.

The Controller will be initially responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions within the business, with an opportunity to grow into a larger role within the financial department. Under the supervision of the CEO, the controller will assist in the planning, organizing, directing, controlling, measuring, and communicating financial matters of Birnam.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an effective accounting system and ensure all transactions within the system are appropriate and properly recorded.
  • Perform treasury activities, including banking, A/R & A/P monitoring, etc. to ensure beneficial and reliable cashflows.
  • Develop and complete Management reporting on a timely basis to ensure business results are clearly understood by appropriate parties and to support effective decision-making.
  • Manage the accounts receivable process to ensure prompt Customer payments and minimize bad debt risk.
  • Manage the accounts payable process to ensure balance between timely supplier payments and prudent cash management.
  • Maintain an effective and accurate payroll system and oversee all transaction processing.
  • Lead regular business planning activities, including annual budgeting and monthly forecasting.
  • Assist in Human Resources management, including payroll and compensation structure and administration.
  • Assist in managing insurance and other risk mechanisms to ensure the Company is protected from business risk at determined levels.
  • Liaise with external accounting firm for quarterly/annual reviews and corporate tax returns.
  • Manage company loans and liaise with lenders and vendors.
  • Lead asset management, depreciation, and loan set ups.
  • Manage and provide leadership to department staff, including hiring, communication, motivation, process improvement support, coaching and development, and discipline.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Proven experience in working with staff with multiple levels of finance knowledge.
  • Interested in learning other departments to help improve processes that flow through the finance department.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Intermediate Excel experience

Experience & Education

  • Post Secondary education in Accounting or related field
  • A minimum 3-5 years experience in an intermediate financial position
  • CPA, CA, CGA, or CMA designation or working towards designation
  • Construction experience is considered an asset as well as familiarity with the Construction Act
