Full job description
Do you want to develop more than just a product?
Then Jobber might be the place for you! We’re looking for a Mobile Principal Software Engineer to be part of our Software Engineering team.
At Jobber, we don’t just build a product - we work on real problems that help people in small businesses to become successful. We are inspired by our company values: be humble, be supportive and give a shit, which are not just said, but are lived. We work in a collaborative environment where teams make decisions with autonomy and contribute directly to shaping the company’s future. We release early and often while dedicating time to address technical debt. We believe in getting instant feedback from our customers and leveraging that to make their lives easier.
We help employees grow professionally; we have a ton of onboarding resources, tutorials, hackathons and buddies to support learnings and provide opportunities to innovate. We have a range of experience levels on teams which allow for mentor/mentee opportunities. Leaders at Jobber work with empathy and support employees to build a healthy work-life harmony. Bring your dedication and passion to this job to fulfill your goals.
The team:
Our Software Engineering team is central to the success of Jobber - focused on creating software that delivers value to tens of thousands of users around the world. The Foundations group is responsible for the core technologies that all our users interact with every day: the mobile app, our web app, and the design system.
At Jobber we never stop growing and learning, and you shouldn’t either. Through continuous 1:1’s, dedicated feedback and support from your manager and our Learning and Development team, and your own sense of curiosity, we hope you develop to another level with your skill set.
The role:
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Software Engineering, the Mobile Principal Software Engineer will work with the rest of the engineering organization to build an industry-leading mobile app that helps our customers and their small businesses be successful. We’re looking for someone who is ready to solve problems that millions of entrepreneurs are facing, using their experience to drive solutions and influence the engineering organization and Jobber as a whole to achieve this goal. It's important that you can lead by example, influence decision-making, effectively handle conflict, and be a champion for engineering best practices.
The Mobile Principal Software Engineer will ensure the engineering organization is able to deliver a great, high quality mobile app experience to all our customers (and as efficiently as possible, given the other constraints). This usually will look like mentoring and lending a coding hand where needed. Principal Engineers are also expected to drive long-term mobile platform strategy and continuously identify opportunities (tools, processes, architectural patterns) that accelerate delivery across teams.. Finally, Principal Engineers collaborate with the engineering managers to help all engineers grow.
The Mobile Principal Software Engineer will:
-
Understand how and why our customers work the way they do, so you can investigate and design the mobile platform of the future and the roadmap to get there.
-
Stay ahead of the industry by researching emerging mobile technologies, prototyping new approaches, and producing design documents and technical findings that inform the team's direction before work hits the roadmap.
-
Deliver high quality and well-structured code and mentor teammates to do the same
-
Actively engage with stakeholders to determine the best solution to our customers’ problems
-
Be ready and willing to jump in where needed at any time to facilitate teams achieving their goals
-
Identify, advocate for, and lead cross-functional initiatives
-
Breakdown and explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
-
Utilize AI tools to enhance development practice. At Jobber, we use AI tools to complement human skills and augment productivity, not to replace human creativity, critical thinking, and decision-making.
To be successful, you should have:
-
A rich, well-rounded software engineering background with a proven track record of developing impactful customer-facing software products in senior technical leadership roles.
-
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of complex problems and lead engineering efforts to solve such problems
-
Enthusiasm for delivering value early and often to customers
-
Strong experience in mobile development for iOS and Android, ideally in React Native in a production environment
-
A compelling vision of what it takes to build an incredible mobile platform
-
Experience with the entire software development lifecycle in the Agile/Scrum framework
-
A track record of producing clear technical writing (RFCs, design documents, architecture decision records) that drives alignment across teams.
-
Hands-on experience using tools like ChatGPT, Cursor, and Copilot to enhance your workflows in your workflow, refining how you balance AI-driven efficiency with the craft of software development, both for yourself and others on your team.
It would be really great (but not a deal-breaker) if you had:
-
Experience with Swift and Kotlin for native mobile development
-
Experience with GraphQL in a production environment
-
Familiarity with mobile performance testing & monitoring
-
Familiarity with Ruby on Rails (our backend technology)
Please note: All interviews are currently being conducted virtually – via phone or video.
Location:
We believe great collaboration is intentional, and sometimes that means coming together in person to build, brainstorm, and connect. To support this, the role is open to candidates based in one of our hub cities: Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo.
Compensation:
At Jobber, we believe that compensation should be transparent, fair, and supportive of your experience and growth. This role has a minimum annual salary of $196,300 CAD, a midpoint of $230,900 CAD, and a maximum salary of $265,600 CAD, designed to reflect the progression from learning the ropes to truly excelling.
We design our compensation to reflect each new hire's skills, experience, and the complexity of the role, ensuring a fair and competitive salary. Our range is intentionally broad to support growth and long-term impact, with fully established hires typically starting around the midpoint. The higher end of the range is reserved for those who have demonstrated deep expertise and lasting contributions, while offers below the midpoint reflect strong potential with room to develop. This approach ensures that compensation aligns with both an individual's current capabilities and their opportunity for future growth.
Base salary is just one part of a total compensation package that will include equity rewards, annual stipends for health and wellness, retirement savings matching, and an extended health package with fully paid premiums for body and mind. Your professional growth matters to us too! You'll have access to a dedicated talent development program that includes career coaching and opportunities for career development. We believe in transparency and open conversations about compensation. If you have any questions about our approach, we're happy to discuss them throughout the hiring process!
What you can expect from Jobber:
-
A total compensation package that includes an extended health benefits package with fully paid premiums for both body and mind, matching in RRSP, TFSA or FHSA, and stock options.
-
A dedicated Talent Development team and access to coaching, learning, and leadership programs to help you grow your career, reach your goals, and unlock your full potential.
-
A unique opportunity to build, grow, and leave your impact on a $400-billion industry that has no dominant player...yet.
-
To work with a group of people who are humble, supportive, and give a sh*t about our customers.
We believe that diverse teams perform better and that fostering an inclusive work environment is a key part of growing a successful team. We welcome people of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to working with applicants requesting accommodation at any stage of the hiring process.
